Upstairs Re: Noise

I live on the ground floor of a Victorian house, upstairs have wooden floorboards and are currently wondering around non-stop with shoes on making a horrible constant clunking sound.

Would I be unreasonable, to knock on their door and ask them to take their shoes off?

I'm not sure.

Oh you have my sympathies, I had the same problem last year. Mine were clunky even without shoes...and then they had twin babies...and that's when I had to move.

Definitely go and ask them to take their shoes off.

This is a difficult one. My father lives in a block of flats and has wooden floors. He was asked the same thing by his neighbours. He bought slippers and would ensure he walked rather than stomped - not that at 73 he would stomp a lot anyway.

They still came back and complained.

Old buildings are badly insulated for noise and it may well be that no matter what they wear or what carpets/rugs they put down, you will still hear noise.

Is there anything in the lease to say they should have carpets? In my leasehold flat there is a stipulation.

You can only ask but there is little official you can do on this.

Check the lease of the flats with regards to not having carpet?

Ps a good underlay can do wonders.

I have the opposite problem I'm on the top floor and have carpets over original floorboards. I paid out for the best carpet and underlay to minimise noise but over the past 6 months the creaks have increased to the point my neighbor says it sounds like an army marching. Luckily we have a good relationship and he knows it's not my fault but it doesn't stop me feeling guilty.
