AIBU to feel pissed off at my friend about compensation

My friend was invovled in a bus accident which resulted in 'whiplash' and saw a physio, she recently got awarded a lot of compensation money (a couple of grand she told me) however me and a few others feel that she was miliking the extent of her injuries.
A few years ago i got severly beaten up and suffered a broken jaw in several places. I got awarded about 3 grand compensation. AIBU to feel pissed off at the fact that I suffered a lot lot worse than she did, yet she still gets more compensation (I do understand that the money was from the bus company)?? I know it isn't about the money and I didnt even want the compensation money at first but i feel really angered by it yet i feel selfish for doing so as shes my friend.
Am i also BU to feel pissed off that she keeps being so insensitive about the situation (i've told her that i feel upset and angry as to how shes got so much money) yet she still keeps bragging about it and bringing it up.

What a lovely friend you are.

She was in a road accident, which resulted in her having an injury and needing physio.

mumblechum1 · 15/01/2013 15:49

Maybe she had a better lawyer.

I don't think either of you should be talking about it if it's a source of annoyance.

Presumably your award was from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, whereas hers was paid for through the bus company's insurance.

Wow. You sound like a nasty piece of work. Jealous and bitter.
Well I for one hope she enjoys the money. And finds a new friend to help her spend it.

merlottits · 15/01/2013 15:55

And 'whiplash' does not need to be in inverted commas - it is actually a serious and debilitating injury. Jeez.

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 15/01/2013 15:56

Her payout had no effect on yours at all. You sound like a horrible 'friend', I can't believe you would tell her that her compensation is making you upset and angry.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/01/2013 15:57

YABU.

Its not a competition.

I doubt she did milk her injuries, unless she wasn't hurt at all. But 2k for whiplash is pretty much minimum payment. I got whiplash - had a sore neck for a few days and I got 2k compensation. I didn't exaggerate symptoms at all, just said my neck was slightly sore for a few days.

I don't think the two things are connected, she had no control over what you got from your attack or what happened to you, they are completely isolated incidents. I can understand why you may feel it is unjust but it really isn't your friends fault and I don't think you should aim your anger towards her.

YABU
Your payment was from CICB- it works on a tariff and what you get is pretty much set. This is because it is from Tax payers money

your friend got what a court would have awarded her.

you should be grateful that you live in a society where the govt sees fit to pay compensation to the victims of crime.

blueemerald · 15/01/2013 16:25

Whilst you do sound a little bitter and sensitive if she really does keep 'bragging' about it and 'bringing it up' I would tell her to pipe down. Just respond 'Yes, we know' and change the subject. I'd get annoyed having to continually hear about it and I've (thankfully) never been in a situation comparable to yours.
