Am I too young?
Is M&S too frumpy?!

I like m&s for clothes.

Depends what you buy though.

SpottyBagOfTumble · 15/01/2013 12:03

Buy clothes you like wherever they are sold. Your money :)

Personally, I find it too expensive there.

RedHelenB · 15/01/2013 12:05

I ALWAYS get complimented on my M & S perfume & have been wearing it since my 30's.

MWBBE · 15/01/2013 12:09

Well I don't buy the huge granny pants Grin

I buy the jeggings, the (nicer) underwear, the perfume

Then I buy quite a bit for work as well (dresses, pencil skirts, tops, shoes). They are one of the few places where I find I can get work clothes that are smart and with decent length skirts (I am very tall). If I try and dress for work out of anywhere 'trendy' I end up looking like a hooker Grin

I do like Reiss and Whistles but can't afford them except for in the sales

I'm nearly old enough to be your mother and it's too frumpy for me

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 15/01/2013 12:20

I buy a lot for work from M&S. I find it more classy and tasteful.

Also the quality can be better than other places for things like cardigans and their underwear is still good.

ps I'm 33 Grin

Actually M and S had some great lines in the spring, and their A/W stuff, mainly in Limited Collection and Autograph was pretty good too.
About 3 years ago they had a whole range of amazing, vintage inspired printed pencil skirts and fab dresses, which I bought a few of, and always get people saying "where did you get that?"
So no, of course YANBU.
Just stay away from Per Una... Grin

LightbulbSoup · 15/01/2013 12:25

I've been buying my underwear in there since I was 18 and yes I did get laughed at but I like their stuff. I'm 29 now so don't think it's too old at all. I love the food from M&S as well. I'd do my weekly shop in there if I could afford it.

1991all · 15/01/2013 12:30

Really?

Startail · 15/01/2013 12:33

MWBBE Grin

My 14yo DD2 has an M&S denim indigo skirt for exactly the same reason. She grew her Dotty P skirt didn't.

It has been deemed decent for wearing only over leggings.

TroublesomeEx · 15/01/2013 12:33

I get my underwear from there.

Pandemoniaa · 15/01/2013 12:34

Same here. Including age.

There seems to have been another downward slide into depressing, frumpy garments recently. I love their food. I like their bedding and some of the home furnishings stuff but their clothes make you lose the will to live.

KatoPotato · 15/01/2013 12:35

The five pocket jeggings (that are not at all a jegging!) are fabulous.

High Five for thinking 30 is too young for anything!

KoalaTale · 15/01/2013 12:40

They sell great underwear!

IfNotNowThenWhen · 15/01/2013 12:51

See, I think M and S is actually bad for undies these days. Debenhams is much better.

NorbertDentressangle · 15/01/2013 12:55

Well I'm mid 40s and have just started buying a few bits and bobs of Autograph work wear there but thats mainly because I needed an entire smart wardrobe when I started a new job and found some at a good price at an M&S outlet.

Oh, and I bought some of the Lana jeans after reading an article about them (designed for a shape rather than a size IYSWIM) but was really disappointed in them as they were crap

gail734 · 15/01/2013 13:07

I'm 37 and I've never stopped shopping in M&S - my mother dressed me in their kids' clothes throughout childhood. She bought my school uniform there too. Now it's like a comfort thing. The only thing I've never bought there is a bra, because I'm an unusual size (small back, mahoosive boobs.) They now claim to do my size, but if I try one on, it's totally different from all my Bravissimo bras. I think M&S is better quality across the board. I'm a big fan of black tops (huge bust again!) and I have some M&S ones that have lasted for years. Have to agree with the "avoid Per Una" advice though. It's all so embellished.

PessaryPam · 15/01/2013 13:33

Gail it took me ages to go back to M&S. My Mum used to take us shopping on Saturdays and as I was a naughty child I associated M&S with slapped legs! I am now mid 50s and I like the leggings and the underwear, but I buy from eBay as there are traders there that deal on the overbuys.

DreamingOfTheMaldives · 15/01/2013 13:46

I think it depends which of their stores you shop in. My local store and the one where I grew up are both very 'Grannyish' and I don't go in those apart from for food. The M&S in our local City and a couple on retails parks are fantastic.

I tend to buy underwear and work clothes from their. I got two gorgeous sets of underwear from my M&S from my DH for Christmas.

I am 33.
