To be shocked at the price of Beavers?

Just had to turn down a place for DS at beavers today because it was just too expensive :( I'd been looking forward to him doing it for such a long time too!
£30 for the term- £180 a year. Well there is only four weeks in this term and next term so thats a whopping £7.50 per session. Uniform is another £30ish quid on top of that and the whole price doesn't include trips.
Am i being a massive cheapskate? I just think thats an insane amount to charge for 45 mins of play and activities!

Another one with volunteers, Sirzy and a charity with fund raising.

OP could suggest that the group fundraises and they lower the subs, but I doubt whether it would be popular with parents- who would have to give time and effort- in general they prefer to give money.

Our local Beavers costs £15/term (an old half-term) so £75/year. It has only fairly recently gone up from £10/term (£60/year) but it is still by far the cheapest activity he does). It also lasts 1 hr and 15 mins.

Are you sure that they aren't talking about an old term making it a more reasonable £90/year?
You could ask the leader about second hand uniform - when my son moved up to cubs I gave his uniform to the leader to give to a child just joining or sell and raise funds as he felt appropriate. I would imagine that isn't unusual.

Sorry - £90 year!

snowybrrr · 14/01/2013 18:23

Brownies here is £12 per term. What a bargain! Mind you they only pay £3.50 for the hall and fundraise separately for annual 'census' fee

IAmLouisWalsh · 14/01/2013 18:25

Get a badger instead. Beavers are big toothed bastards.

Out of our cub subs (£30 per term) about a third goes to central scout funds, for insurance / leader training etc. A significant chunk goes on rent for the scout hall sessions and the remainder is for resources - which as other have said often get supplemented from the leaders' pockets. As a group we do other fundraising for bigger equipment such as new tents. Our biggest problem is lack of adult helpers - we have a lengthy waiting list but can't accommodate them as we don't have enough leaders Sad

Don't buy a brand-new uniform. My son was invested yesterday and I bought his sweatshirt, polo shirt (not essential), neckerchief and woggle second-hand from our Beaver colony for just £3! I picked up the trousers on eBay for £4. The whole lot new would have cost around £35. At £3 for a 90-minute session, Beavers is definitely the cheapest club/activity around here.
