To stop taking antibiotics

Apologies firstly, I know this probably isnt the right place, however I have only taken 2 doses , is it safe to stop taking them , I am not convinced I need them and I am feeling really sick since taking them. Will stopping them do more harm, even if I do not have an infection anyway. Have anxiety disorder and I am really stressed over this .TIA

that anitibiotic always makes me feel very sick too. sometimes antibiotics just do. if you have been told to take them then take them. if you're really unsure then go to your gp tomorrow. they wont take you off them just because you feel sick.

im on my 3rd (different) antibiotic in 3 weeks. i had a very bad reaction to the 2nd lot. swollen feet, ankles and calfs, i couldnt walk properly, burning sensation and pain in ankles, headaches, they sent me to sleep 2 hours after each pill, i lost my voice, i was very sick and dizzy, i had tingles in my hands and face... 4 days i had of this and they only took me off them when my throat started to swell up. if its not life threatening or you are literally vomiting all the time then they are likely to tell you to continue the course

Amoxicillin made me physically sick so the next day I went back to the Dr (without missing a dose) and they changed it for me.

You should get medical advice for this.

I now tell Drs not to prescribe it for me because of my previous reaction - I've been told it's fairly common.

Nausea and antibiotics is pretty common OP, have you checked the leaflet that comes with your brand of them? I once had an allergic reaction, really nasty, I don't get on with antibiotics at all most make me sick.

Narked · 13/01/2013 21:42

Have all the antibiotics been for UTIs? Have you been referred to a specialist?

Itchywoolyjumper · 13/01/2013 21:44

From the point of view of preventing the rise of superbugs its a good idea to finish the course you've been given but if you feel rubbish on them go and see your GP and get them changed, the GP may even have the results of your urine culture back and you can stop them if you don't need them.
Please don't worry about the C.diff, as someone up thread said its really only a problem if you're otherwise unwell. If you do get it you'll get loads of runny, dark green shit, it looks a bit like old, badly chopped spinach and it stinks (you'll never be left wondering if you've got C.diff, its pretty obvious) but it can be treated with antibiotics so not to worry.
InLoveWithDT that sounds pretty bad, did they explain why they were so desperate to keep you on those particular antibiotic when there are so many to choose from?

itchy i had surgery over 4 weeks ago which got infected. apparently i have several infections (bugs?), not just the one.

not sure what they'll do if the current ones dont work Confused

Not finishing a course of antibiotics directly increases the prevelance of antibiotic resistant bacteria. It's one of the main reasons superbugs are on the increase.

Simply put, every time a course isn't finished, it means that only the strongest of the bacteria survive. The more the strongest survive, the quicker the bacteria become drug resistant. It's probably one of the biggest health risks we face in the 21st century and as long as people keep on doing it, the problem will only get bigger. Just as shocking is that some doctors still give this short sighted advice.

InLove, you poor thing, hope it gets sorted soon. I would say if they've sent off a swab from your wound to the lab the ones you're on now should work. Normally the first antibiotics you go on are the best guess at what will work. Then they get the swab results back so they pick one that they know will work but you didn't get on with those ones so I'd say they've swapped you onto an third type that they know will work and shortly you'll be on the road to recovery.
In the meantime I can heartily recommend watching the Spies of Warsaw, it'll cheer you up no end, David is rather dashing in it Grin

thank you itchy its been tough especially as im getting over a sinus infection too.

they took a swab on the day they put me on the first lot on xmas eve. got the results a week later to be told that the ones i was on would kill all but one, so they prescribed the 2nd. am now on ones that will hopefully work, and was told they will work for my sinuses too which is a bonus.

spies is on my to watch list for tomorrow... cant wait Grin

Hi, can I ask. I’m taking a 3days antibiotic pills (Co-amoxiclav 625mg 3x a day) for my tooth abscess. And I’m now at my last day of taking the pills but In this day I only consume 1 tablet there still 2 remaining but I already felt terrible and I’m not sure if I could consume the another 2 for d day. I felt itchy, I have abdominal pain, pain in my right pelvic. Sweating.. stomach upset and diarhea.. and I also look pale. I don’t know what to do. And I can’t go back to the doctor right now since we have some financial issues.. can I stop taking my antibiotics? Or should I continue it?
