I rather suspect I am, but I need to have a bit of a rant...

I shall stamp my feet and declare it to be unfair here so that I don't do it in real life.

I do know I am being unreasonable.

MIL came into a substantial amount of money recently through a lottery win. Think 5 numbers.

She has given us £240 to share between myself, DH and DS.

She has given SIL £900.

SIL lives at home rent free. She has no expenses other than a £10 a week bus fare to her well paid job.

DH and I are struggling to meet our rent at the moment each month, neither of us have particularly well paying jobs and our sons childcare just decimates all of our wages.

I am very grateful for the amount she has given us, it is going into the heating oil savings, I just wish she had maybe shared it out a bit more equally that's all.

Rant and feet stamping over...

Wabally - I only work three days a week, and we pay £110 a week for three days. Decimation is a bit of an exaggeration, but the childcare is what is causing us to struggle the most.

My brother does this thing every christmas where he picks random relative and says wasn't it nice of uncle such and such to gives us all £200 (usually double the amount Uncle such and such has given us) we've grown used to him doing it now and don't fall for it anymore but the first couple of years he really wound us up with it. You sure SIL isn't doing something similar? Perhaps MIL is planning on giving you some more money at a later date or has bought you a nice holiday or something?

LadyFlumpalot · 13/01/2013 18:29

Wabbally, sorry, not Wabally!

Just to clarify - I am in no way, going to say anything to MIL, I'm just ranting here so I can get it off my chest and carry on smiling sweetly.

Wabbally · 13/01/2013 18:34

Fair enough, Lady. I can understand that. We would struggle if we had to pay that out.

PumpkinPositive · 13/01/2013 18:38

How much does five numbers get you? (Not an avid player)

DontmindifIdo · 13/01/2013 18:39

does she know how tight things are for you two at the moment? It could be SIL is crying poverty which she notices, compared to you looking like you're coping.

Be sure she knows it's just gone on heating bills (but is covering around a quarter of it) not on treats for you. At those sums, I bet she expects you to get something nice with it.

Wabbally · 13/01/2013 18:40

We have somewhat of a similar situation actually, DH's grandmother moved to Austria and gave the 4 grandchildren some money (from the proceeds of her house sale).

Grandchild no. 1 - Works as a GP, husband is a self-made millionaire - received £10,000
Grandchild no. 2 - (DH) works, not particularly well paid, we struggle to pay any large bills that come up - received £5,000
Grandchild no 3 - single, well paid job, owns Audi TT, lives at home with parents (paying no board) - received £6,000
Grandchild no 4 - 5 year old - received £5,000.

Confused
PumpkinPositive · 13/01/2013 18:41

Does she know about your financial situation? She may assume with two worker bees, you and hub are better off than sis-in-law.

oldebaglady · 13/01/2013 18:43

while you have no right to be annoyed, and should be greateful etc etc...
but I'ld be pretty pissed off too despite myself!

oldebaglady · 13/01/2013 18:45

Wabbally is it possible that the millionaire helped them out financially in the past so it was part re-payment part gift?

Me either I had to google - this week 5 numbers gave you £257

There was me thinking 5 numbers mean 10 grand!

I had 4 numbers once and got £44, the following week my collegue got £127 it depends on the amount of players.

I read it that MIL had won a 5 figure sum i.e. £10,000
OP i would be unhappy too.

LadyFlumpalot · 13/01/2013 19:00

Day know, it never occurred to me to google and find out how much she won! Grin I am daft.

She hasn't actually told us the figure, just "I had some luck on the lottery, would like you to have this" the rest was just speculation and wild imagination on my part. Probably should have made it clear.

If SIL is telling the truth and got £900, and we got £240 then MIL had to have won at least £1140, I would assume she had kept the majority to herself so that's how I got £10k. Could be hugely wrong.

OP posts:
Yfronts · 13/01/2013 19:44

Could you DH say something 'SIL is so lucky to have received 900 but I expect she will just flit it away on gadgets'

DontmindifIdo · 13/01/2013 20:01

Hollyberry, I believe it does really depend on the week and how many other people get the same numbers - I think a couple of weeks ago 5 numbers would get you £77k. It really varies, in the same way that this week, getting 6 numbers would only get you £1/4mil by the time it was devided up, whereas other weeks it would get you £3mil.

I remember reading somewhere that you won more if you won with numbers that were above 31 as a lot of people who have 'lucky numbers' and play every week have dates as their lucky numbers. You have the same chance of winning regardless of which numbers you pick, although you have a better chance of winning big if you pick unpopular numbers..

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 13/01/2013 20:01

If you google, and it turns out she won £500, then you can come back and tell us and we will think up loads of lovely pointed remarks for you to make in SiLs hearing. She could think it's funny to be winding you up, or want you to fall out with MiL for twisted reasons of her own, you never know. People are strange

TheEarlOfDoncaster1963 · 13/01/2013 20:16

ooh yes please look it up and see what she won (if you know which date she won it?)... I agree it's not fair to give different amounts to her son & daughter (esp. when the son has a family).

chickensarmpit · 13/01/2013 20:19

If i won the lottery i wouldn't give anyone anything. I would secretly sulk off and blow the lot.
Then again, most people i know use me as a personal bank as it is and that's know, while i'm a pauper.

Bubblegum78 · 13/01/2013 20:23

I would be narked too, but you would sound greedy if you mention it, catch 22.

Sucks. x

MmeGuillotine · 13/01/2013 20:32

Chickens, that's what I'd do too. In fact I told my husband this last night and he was horrified and then pointed out the unlikelihood and impracticality of my keeping potentially millions of pounds a secret from him, particularly as I am ahem a known spendthrift. Grin
