I can understand the major issues where this is the only way to get treatment as the NHS won't fund it, but why would you want to go on a major (ish) tv show for issues in your private areas and show the whole world your problems when you could just go to your gps, get the same help and not have it broadcasted.

Am I missing something? Do they get paid? :/

Maybe he wipes his arse with his hands and then fixes his quiff? Give the quiff a whiff.

They must be getting free surgery etc.

I remember one where this woman had lost lots of weight but her fanjo had been somehow damaged by the weight she previously had. You could see right up into her womb and it was shown in close up. I think she got sent off for corrective surgery.

Remember quite an elderly man too with that condition where the skin is too tight on the penis. It was horrible all broken and weeping. He had been like that for years and never done anything about it. Dr C commented on the bad smell....Shock

I'm going to be quite honest here as it's anon -

a) I have the same difficulty as the man - due to dyspraxia, I struggle to know how to effectively cleanse the back, and that can cause a bit of mingingness.. I've also got issues with internal piles which cause leakage. I don't think anyone would choose to suffer in such a way, there's obviously a reason why they do. Laughing at them's a bit unfair. But then maybe I lose my sense of humour here because I can empathise. I must say I wouldn't go to the telly with that, I'd go to my own GP first and have done.

b) I was going to appear on a similar TV programme and have filled out the application forms for EB - I suffered from quite severely hypertrophic labia as a child/teen and struggled to get help at all, was told outright by a GP and two consultants that I was silly, wasting the NHS money and must watch pornography a lot..

I felt going on TV would show to some extent that this was a real condition, not (in my case) due to aesthetic problems or anything. I was put off in the end as the programme actually said they wished to portray me as a virgin who nobody wanted due to my large bits, they wanted to focus entirely on my sex life.. And they were quite good at manipulating my answers and editing things. They knew exactly what to ask and in my first interview, "Are you a virgin? Is that because your bits are ugly? Do you watch porn? Are you jealous that pornstars have pretty bits and you don't? Do you feel you're wasting NHS time? etc etc." Lot of talk about the designer vagina.. Bloody weird and not what I wanted but if there were an option to discuss things as I wanted I'd have done it no problem.

I also felt they'd take more care with the surgery as the results would be shown on TV - but it worked out in my favour as my hospital were not used to the surgery, read up a lot, took extreme care and used it for teaching with students allowed to observe. So the care was pretty good anyway...

Thanks for the insight confusteling. I'm glad you didn't go on, it sounds exploitative.

PeacockFeathers · 13/01/2013 11:35

Have you seeb the specialists they get sent to? If I had a problem that my GP refused to treat, I would flash my fanjo on tv to get referred to a Harley St dr.

shriekingnora · 13/01/2013 11:36

Thank you for sharing that confusteling. I think your original reasons for wanting to go on were admirable and it's a shame they wanted to exploit it. FWIW I do think the parts of the programme where they educate people and stop them sniggering in corners about stuff like checking testicles are really good and informative. Just a shame they have to have the other stuff to get the people that could do with watching it to watch it!

Hmm. I also completely fail to understand why people would go on TV for some of these issues. But from a public information point of view, the shows are excellent. I have had many people attending the surgery saying "Well, I wasn't going to bother you, but I saw it on Embarrassing Bodies so...".

It raises awareness of common, treatable problems, which can only be a good thing, IMO.
