To have a naked woman in my kitchen?

DH says she must go, she's weirding people out.

I've got a large print of a nude painting and she's framed and above the kitchen table. The DCs (5&3) are pretty immune to her but their friends do sometimes pass comment. To the trained artistic eye she does look post-coital but not to small children, obviously.

DH is adamant that everyone thinks it's me in the picture (no, I wasn't Modigliani's muse) and also that it's odd to have it where people are eating. I think nudes are normal and he's being prudish.

If it's one of the one's where the lady in question is scratching her muff then I think your DH may have a point.

We had a calendar featuring pictures by the artist Tamara de Lempicka hanging in our kitchen once. Beautiful pictures and yes, the occasional female nude. Our DCs were about 8 and 11 at the time, they didn't seem embarrassed. Perhaps the difference was the whole calendar only measured about 12" by 8" so it didn't dominate the room, not too in-your-face though it hung on the wall right by the table.

Went to the Tate today and bought two posters in their sale- Gauguin exhibition and Chagall-- oo so lower middle ain't I (heads up for anyone who wants nice cheapish posters- their mini prints were £3 and my two were £7.50 altogether!).


I don't mind, if only because for me it's more studenty than anything else- pictures without frames, blutac and spellotape. I don't have them just to fill the space though.....I do read about them and that

Erm ... doesn't hanging 'off piste' art in preference to good repro just suggest you don't have much taste? I mean, there's a reason the good stuff is the good stuff.

I would probably go with DH's views if it really bothered him but I would think he was being a tiny bit of a prude, yes.

I don't get why the kitchen is odd. Surely naked pics in someone's bedroom are much more likely to make people think you're perving rather than appreciating 'art'?

I mean, I get why you might decide a famous picture has just started to bore you because you've seen it a zillion times ... but why would you go out of your way to avoid famous paintings?

I'm fighting a losing battle to exclude nudes from general display at home, because a) I like them, and just see the art rather than nudity, and b) DP is an artist and always rotates originals for potential clients to see, or has prints up for the same reason. We do have other art up too, but his stuff is almost white noise to me now. I'm in lots of these, but I like to think my usual scruffiness is enough of a curveball to stop general visitors making the connection .

I just think, put up what makes you smile, think, what provokes memories, what goes with the furniture, what sets you off dreaming, what you want your kids to see.....to hell with what the guests think, it's your bloody home. If you want your living room to look like a teenager's bedroom......so be it! If you want it all a hundred shades of magnolia and a hundred more of beige.....great, doesn't make you much more of a grownup though....

My mum has all her stuff up at home, natures mortes and otherwise landscapes....she did paint my room though, with a pretend window (which I covered with a bookcase as an embarrassed teenager!)...

There are reasons the good stuff if the good stuff. Generally a stupid reason. The Mona Lisa isn't any better than a thousand other portraits. It just got stolen at a really good time for it. I only have originals up in my house and I am certainly not posh or rich. There are so many incredibly talented artists selling for peanuts. I'm totes jel of all of you who've been drinking. I've just been reading theories about the development of masculinity in modern society for my college course. 2 papers down, 4 to go.

Why are there so few nudes of a man? Actually I prefer more 'natural' pics than posed ones, as if we just got to see someone while they're sitting having a think, or doing something, rather than it's something they've posed for.

There's a lot of snobbery about art. If you like it, flaunt it, though dh should get a say as well.

I took dd to Tate Modern recently & she was very underwhelmed. (she's 9)

Slight leap. There are art galleries, museums, books and t'internet for famous paintings. I just think homes are for stuff you've picked up in junk shops, on holiday, been given or painted by a friend. Etc.

As I said, I realise it's not a popular viewpoint! But it's certainly not about avoiding famous paintings at home. Just leaving them to be hung in their rightful place. :)

I was also at the Courtauld yesterday and saw a Modigliani nude and grinned because of this thread!
They had some Lucian Freud etchings. One of a man. It was ugly, didn't like it.

My friend has a print of the Mona Lisa and just the Mona Lisa in her room. I'd go a bit crazy if I had to look at that every day. It is sombre !

It is like having a Van Gogh Sunflower print, or Mona Lisa on your wall. Totally lacking in imagination. It looks like you dont know good art, so went into the National Gallery or some place, and just picked up some well known poster in the sale/bargain bucket in the hope it would make you look arty, or art loving or even knowledgeable - It doesnt. It is just naff.

Can you find some more obscure labias to display where you eat, rather than posters of famous ones?

Perhaps her husband could paint some food on the floor next to her, like a baguette, some carrots and maybe even cucumber, giving a "39 1/2 weeks sort of look"
