he had a little pain when they put in the local anesthetic

he felt uncomfortable between coming out of the room and getting on the sofa at home.

then nothing..
no discomfort
honestly like nothing had happened

he is not being brave, he is not hiding anything it really really just doesn't hurt.

I am not wishing pain on him, just had really set up for bag of peas and waiting on him hand and foot kind of thing.

is it really unusual?

Don't be unnerved, be glad! DH had loads of problems after his, including the stitches falling out before the wound had healed and it subsequently becoming infected (guess who had the job of cleaning and dressing it each day because he couldn't reach/bear to look), bruising and swelling bad enough to stop him walking round much for about 2 weeks, not being able to sleep without a pillow between his knees - the list goes on. He tried to be all brave about it but had to give in and have a little cry at one point, bless him.

wewereherefirst · 11/01/2013 11:08

Oh god, DH has his in two weeks...

McNewPants2013 · 11/01/2013 11:12

DH was in a little pain but nothing a few pain medication didn't solve.

MrsBethel · 11/01/2013 12:20

From what I've read:
~90% of vasectomies are completely problem free
~10% involve some sort of short-term complication (bleeding/infection/inflammation, that sort of thing).
~1% cause chronic long-term pain

GilmoursPillow · 11/01/2013 12:28

DH's took quite a while to heal but was relatively painless and I don't think he was stitched either, was a dinky little incision. Mind you he had his done in the UK ahead of a course he was attending (we live overseas) so he was about 10 days post-op by the time he came back to let me peer at it close-up into my care.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/01/2013 12:35

Asked Dh he said not uncomfortable on the day but bruising emerged Day2 ouch.

TapirBackRider · 11/01/2013 13:10

Dh had his done, then went on his works xmas do straight after. Much drinking and dancing later he came home to show me the wee stitch and was chuffed that it was all pain (and swelling) free!

We were told that we could have sex when we wanted as long as he was comfortable with it, and to use adequate contraception until he got the all-clear.

elliejjtiny · 11/01/2013 14:03

DH is planning on having one after DC4 is born. I am dreading it as he will milk it as much as possible and expect to be treated like a hero returning from war. I am rubbish at sympathy and will probably resent him lounging on the sofa watching dvd's while I run round after 4 dc's, housework etc.

MIL thinks he will need at least 2 weeks on the sofa and suggested he had it done while on paternity leave and kill 2 birds with one stone Shock

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/01/2013 15:17

elliejjtiny well before DC4 arrives for the love of God make sure you remind DH of the old line, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

Ie. if he mucks in and helps life go by sweetly, you shall remember that in due course if he has his vasectomy. If not, tough.

BearPear · 11/01/2013 15:42

My DH had his last month, uncomfortable for quite a while, tight undies helped. Didn't stop us from "testing" if it still worked or not!

ruledbyheart · 11/01/2013 16:42

STBXH had his a couple of years ago and walked out fine and swore it didn't hurt at all, I had a wisdom tooth out the next day and spent 3 days in agony, he did all the child care and everything and didnt complain once.

Arithmeticulous · 11/01/2013 17:00

DH walked home from his Grin

Broodzilla · 11/01/2013 17:39

No riding a bike for 4 weeks? Really?

DH will never, ever have it done now...Confused

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/01/2013 18:03

Does he have sideburns Broodzilla? (2012 Wiggo fan).

BearPear · 11/01/2013 19:18

My DH was back on his bike after a week, but admitted it was too soon. He got back to riding comfortably after 3 weeks max.

Broodzilla · 11/01/2013 20:04

Donkeys: you lost me, sorry

Bear: sadly, I think if I said he can't ride for four days he'd break into a cold sweat...

A day after his op my Dad told me that his previously pink balls had turned black. That was a couple of years ago. I haven't asked for an update.

snoopdogg · 11/01/2013 20:52

My BIL works in the city and all his mates were gung ho about going off in lunchtime, getting the snip under local, back at the desk for 2, full day at the office, yada yada big swinging dicks etc.

So BIL goes off eleven-ish, back to work for two, medivaced out at 3 with balls the size of grapefruit.

Reaction to the anaesthetic apparently.

My sis can still wet herself laughing when recounting the tale.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 11/01/2013 20:57

Sorry Broodzilla was thinking how awkward it would be for a sportsman unable to train on their bike for daily hours after such a procedure.

GypsyTart · 11/01/2013 21:06

snoopdogg Smile The poor bugger. Even so, it's still funny. Balls are always funny.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 11/01/2013 21:09

interestng about the stitches coming out.

the incision was less than half a centimeter and there was no stitch. the doctor squidged the skin together for a minute until it stopped bleeding (wasn't bleeding much) then we were all systems go.

DH is still all fine today Smile

My DH had stitches and they fell out too soon leaving a hole which took weeks and weeks to heal.
He also had major swelling, bruising and stabbing pains in his testicles.
DH is not a wimpy complainer but he really suffered afterwards, maybe 95% of the time it works out well and my DH was just unlucky...

IAmNotAMindReader · 12/01/2013 02:48

Most people don't suffer more than a bit of discomfort. However it is wise to follow the guidelines of not undetaking anything strenuous for a while. I know a couple of people who attempted decorating and furniture lifting who pretty soon had to attend a&e as they thought they were going to bleed to death and lose their now very swollen testicles.
