Re eBay item broken in transit

Have sold an item on eBay for £10, which cost me £3.50 to post, and I charged £3.50.
Have just received a message with photo, saying that the item was broken in transit. I replied, " no problem, will refund the money minus postage" have received a reply saying that they would like refund including postage. If I do this I will therefore have lost money through no fault of mine. Pretty new to EBay so not sure what to say, AIBU?

Its your job to sort it out with the delivery company + get a full refund. You need to give them a full refund regardless

I assume you sent it recorded? If so then you can refund and make a claim through royal mail.

You need to refund the postage aswel, if it got broken in transit the implication is that you didn't pack it well enouigh. If you're certain your packaging was fine then it's the post offices fault so you should take it up with them but you still need to refund the postage to the buyer. You are entitled to the item back but then you'd have to pay for the postage coming back to you aswel. Generally ebay always goes in the buyers favour in my experience.

Ok, that's really useful thanks. Not sure it's worth taking up with Royal Mail but never mind!
