To be P***ed off at dh who hasn't been getting our car serviced for the last few years

Just found out, during a talk about the MOT, that dh (who's responsibility it is) has chosen not to get the car serviced for the past few tears 'because it would cost' apparently...

There is a hell of a lot to a service and people that have their car serviced can expect to have a car which will last far longer.

We have noticed people cutting back on servicing in the last year or so. Dh would say it is a false economy.

Dh's name is on paperwork as first driver/ owner etc

People have really cut back on servicing and then have suffered the consequences.

It's not really a case of not being able to afford a service, more not being able to afford the result of not servicing. Topping up oil etc is not going to save your engine.

Tbh, I would say it's the older, more beaten up cars that are going to need the service more!

Something with 90k on the clock, and ten years on the body work and components will be far more likely to need TLC than some snazzy 18-month-old thing.

Also, people driving older cars that 'can't afford' the service, will be the ones that really cant afford it when something breaks.

If your timing belt goes, your engine is toast. Forget your oil levels and changes, your engine is toast. A planned-for £200 service could (and will eventually) save you hundreds more.

But forget the finances: If your brakes fail, because the pads and shoes 'passed' MOT but are worn to a stump 6 months later because the're 10,000 miles past their usage limit, the consequences could be horrific.

And, frankly, people who don't check tyres regularly shouldn't be allowed to drive - they're the only part of the car in contact with the road! - their condition dictates entirely whether your car stops in time in an emergency, or swerves well enough, or not.

That said, YANBU to be mad that your DH didn't do the one thing he said he would.

Well I have no choice when it comes to having our car serviced - it's either the service or food. Makes it quite simple really.

This may not apply to your car but my dealer warranty requires me to keep up with the servicing or it is void. I really hope this is not the case for you!

lottie63 · 09/01/2013 19:20

It's an oldish car... About 10 years I think so no new car warranty stuff but I think probably a good log book is ammunition in trading it in, even if it just goes for scrap.

Our 'second car ' is 16 years old and still going strong - has been serviced every year .

whois · 09/01/2013 19:50

Argh, you've just reminded me my MOT is due!!!

Thanks OP :-)
