Again the Liverpool pathway is being slated in the press.

What is the vested interest that is driving this? In my opinion the LCP is the correct course of action under the right circumstances and it needs to be done right. I understand that there may be some abuses going on and these need to be stamped out but we should not throw the baby out with the bathwater. What is the alternative if the press get their way and the LCP gets stopped?

I totally agree that there MUST be an ulterior motive, we were only discussing it in work the other day.

The RCN, NMC and the Royal Liverpool themselves have been unbelievably quiet on the issue. In the case of the former two bodies this is very unlike them! I cannot believe that something as well researched and so good when used properly (which is key IMHO) is not being defended!

I cannot see what the motive is, but I really do think something fishy is going on...watch this space!

Working on an acute medical care of the elderly ward, this issue is discussed quite often between nursing and medical staff when these reports come out in the media.

The only reason we can think of as to why it is not defended by the RCN, NMC etc is because nurses and medical staff cannot defend themselves publicly.

If there is a complaint regarding care or the use of the pathway for example, patients and relatives are free to go to the press and report what they seem to believe is poor care or neglect.

The nursing staff and medical teams can defend themselves during an investigation into the complaint. Even when there is no fault with the nursing care, the public are still free to go to the press still complaing of crap care, whilst the staff have to keep quiet due to patient confidentiality.

Sometimes things do go wrong, that shouldn't happen and quite rightly, the issues need to be raised and addressed. But there are patients and relatives that refuse to accept what they are being told, then the threats of making complaints start. It happens a lot.

I think a lot of the angst is due to the conflation of the fear of death with the treatment of the final days. Some of the people would probably be better advised writing a letter to God and complaining. The sad fact is that death is a great taboo in our society and as we are quite infantilized compared with previous generations we just can't handle the truth.

I wish the medical profession would spell out what death is all about, maybe show a few on reality TV.

Counter all that Hollywood bullshit about just fading away romantically.
