Got laminate when it was first fashionable because I believed the BS about it being easier to care for, more practical blah blah. In reality it is cold, hard, needs sweeping AND mopping several times a day, and looks really unwelcoming. Also, it is not nice for crawling babies.

I finally decided to get a carpet with some money I had saved up. Negotiated a brilliant deal and got it fitted today. I love it. I keep looking at it and at the whole room with it in, and the gold rod between the lounge and the dining room, that is still laminated, makes me smile!

H said "OK, dont go on, its just a carpet!"

Had new carpet in the living room 1 week before Christmas last, completed fitting 1630 dog chucked up on it 2200, yep that day!

Was ScotchGuarded - wiped off no issues best investment aside from new carpet was ScotchGuard

I'm really glad that carpet seems to be making a come back. My husband is a carpet and flooring fitter!!! He supplies and fits it if anyone would like a quote.

Mutton what would your dh say about wool v non-wool?

I'm still on carpet hunt but got waylaid by a holiday.

Also wondering what sort of £ per square m people choose.

Looking forward to getting it.

We got a £15 psm one but negotiated free underlay and fitting so it came in at under £300 for the lounge, 4x4m

Just don't iron something on the floor like I did (no, I don't know what i was thinking either) I have a nice triangle shaped burn. Still it was fab when it was brand new. We have parquet floor underneath which people have said we should uncover, but you can't beat the cosy feel of carpet. Not sure its terrible mc though to have fitted carpets.

Bogeyface · 09/01/2013 20:20

Bollocks to whether its MC, its warm!

I made the ironing mistake when we had our old carpet before the laminate, and managed to stick a top to the floor as I left the steamer on Blush :o

Good price too!

Hope you abandoned your sofa for the carpet this evening! Grin

My dh says spend as much as you can afford on high traffic areas like the hall, stairs and landing and the lounge. You can compromise on bedroom carpets but he finds most people like the same carpet throughout the whole house. Wool carpets last longer but you could opt for a 50/50 twist which is half wool and half synthetic and look lovely. I love the smell of new carpet!

BluelightsAndSirens · 09/01/2013 23:06

I love new carpet. Don't tell anyone but when we had our stairs and landing done I spent many afternoons sitting on the stairs reading because it made me feel happy.
