To hope/think we should have a new front door?

We live in an H/A home. We have been here only 3 months and everything that possibly could go wrong has.

One of the things that is a real health hazard is the inside of the front door, its soaking wet , riddled with mould that will not budge!

The HA have agreed that there are many things wrong with the property, especially since I contacted E/ health.Wink

Yesterday (surprise surprise) the asset manager turned up (I link all emails I send them to E/health also)
After looking at the door and agreeing it is indeed a dreadful mess, he told me there is no budget for front doors Confused

I'm not an entitled type, if I could make do I would. I'd hang a curtain/paint. Nothing makes a difference because its rotten to the core!

Why can they get away with stating it can't be sorted. If this was a private rental they Landlord would be forced to fix it.

I'm in touch with E/ health (as I said) and they want to make a visit with the HA, is there anyway they will have any power?

Good luck. We waited 5 years (!) for ours.

Feminine · 08/01/2013 16:57

nick was it riddled with mould also?

I can't believe they are allowed to let children live with it.

Can you get a new door and send them the bill?

NickNacks · 08/01/2013 17:01

It leaked and swelled so didn't fit the frame. In rainy days we had to use the back door. Terrible in an emergency I would think. Used to get black condensation mould but I bleached it regularly. My windows still leak.

Feminine · 08/01/2013 17:03

squeaky I'd love to. I'm sure there will be something against that though.

I'll ask.

nick goodness! just like ours then , sorry.

I've just thinking...apart from black (wink) I should prob find a very strong mould inhibiting paint that almost matches Grin

I'm laughing a bit, but this house has got me very depressed.

Not sure if this will help as i'm unsure about the differences between council tenants and HA tenants.

But my DH is in the fire service. If they do a home fire safety check and find things like unacceptable doors/windows they can get on to the council and social services to get them replaced asap.

Feminine · 08/01/2013 17:32

Thanks max maybe E/health will the same thoughts?

Have you tried bleach and mould spray? Also try a cost of ronseal penetrating damp stuff then a coat of mould resistant paint. Might stop inhibit mould inside for a bit.

MaxPepsi · 08/01/2013 17:38

Hopefully.

Contact your local fire station and ask them to come and do a check. You need one doing anyway.

It might help and certainly can't make it worse.

Feminine · 08/01/2013 17:42

whois yes, :( I've done the whole bleaching thing. It almost give the mould more cheek!

but, I haven't done the ronseal thing. I'll try that -thank you.

max so I just contact the fire station? I'll do that too :) Thanks

Yes, just give them a call - or ring the doorbell next time you are passing and the machine is in. The stations generally have a banner on the front of them with the number to call.

When they come to do the inspection, they should let your kids climb up into the machine also assuming you have kids that would be happy to do that

Also, is it the door, casing or whole lot that needs replacing?

Trying a bathroom sealant might help.

porthcurnick · 08/01/2013 17:52

Have you tried dettol mould and mildew spray this one tesco etc sell it

Is the door wooden or PVC, if wooden I would use damp paint on it, if PVC have you tried one of the special cleaners on it.

Or you could of course, buy a new front door.

JenaiMorris · 08/01/2013 18:12

Are you on an estate? So your neighbours have the same problem?

Our community chap (whoever it was from the HA who looked after our area) was generally pretty good but there were limits to what he could achieve. I would certainly get in touch with you local councillor.

Just a teensy little point (from someone who has lived in private rented, HA and now pays a mortgage) you say " If this was a private rental they Landlord would be forced to fix it" - they might by law but the chances are they wouldn't. There are some ace landlords around but some dreadful ones too.

valiumredhead · 08/01/2013 18:24

I agree - we rented for 12 years privately, we had one LL who was half way decent and that is because he worked for Housing Association Grin the rest were shysters.

Ask when the plan maintenance budget runs from/to. If it's April-March which most of them are (ie the financial year) ask if you can be put on the planned maintenance schedule for 2013/14. Right now is a bad time to be asking for large items - the day to day budgets will be running low, so I would suggest this will be the quickest way to get this resolved rather than arguing against a budget that will be almost certainly almost spent

Molepom · 08/01/2013 20:50

It's a health risk and a security risk. The longer they leave it the more chances there are of:

a) someone kicking that door in and the wood is so weak

b)you and your family getting health problems from the mould. Keep a close eye on coughs and colds from now on.

maddening · 08/01/2013 21:46

Am sure there are some anti mould and sealing type paints - even if it's just till they get more budget (April? )

Feminine · 08/01/2013 22:31

Thanks all of you for the great advise. It is really much appreciated.

This house situation has really been getting me down.

The door is not even the worst of it...
