Aibu to be looking forward to having a spinal?

I am booked in for a planned section on Friday morning, I am actually more excited about the spinal than the squishy baby as for the last 5 months I have been on 60mg codeine every 4 hours, paracetamol, pain injections from an anethitist every 2 weeks into my lower back & have not left the house unless it is to the hospital as I cannot walk further than the drive all because of my pelvis...

I also have to lay completely still for half an hour after eating anything at all else it comes back up in epic projectile vomit bouts..

And I'm exhausted, to the point of tears every day I only seem to be able to nap in 2 hour blocks not easy with a 2&1/3 year old.

So aibu to be excited to have the spinal in so for just a few hours I feel no pain and may even stand a chance of some sleeping??

Sounds like you've had a really tough time with this pregnancy so yanbu, enjoy and I hope that you get some relief once the baby is here!

Fakebook · 08/01/2013 10:43

Yanbu. I had an epidural when in labour with dd. Pure bliss. I even had a nap whilst in the last hour and a half of stage 1. Have fun!

BelleDameSansMerci · 08/01/2013 10:45

Oh you poor thing. Sad

I had a lovely time with my epidural. Also had a snooze and gave birth without it wearing off - pain free delivery. Bliss.

Hope it goes very, very well for you.

charlieandthechocolatecake · 08/01/2013 10:46

YANBU if it works.

However, they don't always work. Mine certainly didn't. Cause a whole heap of complications ending in EMCS.

Yours is planned so will no doubt be organised and less rushed.

Congratulations and good luck Thanks

tinkletinklestar · 08/01/2013 10:52

They won't be cutting me open until it has worked lol

Also wondering if I can get a nice dose of morphine to add to the pain free bliss, I feel quite sad that I am more excited about being pain free for a few hours than my new born.

It's been a shity few months, usually really active and out all day every day I feel so secluded poor dh didn't go to his Xmas parties or meet with friends as I couldn't go and he felt bad.

Yanbu seems you've had a hard time this pg.

I hate them though, just the not being able to move but even under ga for a csection I wasn't mobile till the next day so there's no getting round it really!

I've had 4 spinals and one failed attempt. Good luck for fri, Im also in then to have my cervical stitch removed so we might both have babies in a few days

tinkletinklestar · 08/01/2013 11:21

Ahh moo bet you can't wait.

It's funny we get through the 9 months and some how the final few days seem longer than the entire thing!!

OP posts:
Moominsarescary · 08/01/2013 11:31

It is crap, although I've only gone to full term with ds1. I have a crappy pg history!

I spent months hopeing the stitch would stay in and now it's so uncomfortable I can't wait for them to take it out! I'm 35 weeks but if the baby doesn't come after they take it out I'm booked in for a elcs at 39 weeks so not long to go.

YouOldSlag · 08/01/2013 11:37

I had a terrible time with an epidural that wore off during surgery. Second time round, I had a spinal and it was bliss. I hope you have a great birth. Good luck. the end is in sight!

tinkletinklestar · 08/01/2013 11:39

I went to 40 exactly with dd which ended up with an emergency section.

Then Friday I will be 38+1 so glad I don't have to go any longer.

I don't envy you having stitches removed sounds scary

tinkletinklestar · 08/01/2013 11:39

youoldslag what do you mean wore off during surgery??? As in you felt it all??

OP posts:
Moominsarescary · 08/01/2013 11:50

That happened to a friend of mine, they put her straight under ga

It is a little scary, it hurts quite a bit when they take it out!

I've had two stitches and both times as well as with the emcs they've given me an up the bum suppository for pain, doesn't sound nice but you don't feel them doing it and they work really well

tinkletinklestar · 08/01/2013 12:29

I remember with ddi they gave me a morphine surpositry although I'd had everything known to man by that point!

I've got steroid injections and pre op today and tomorrow so that will break the week up nicely

Blimey that must be horrific for it to stop working!

tinkle- yes, during my EMCS I could feel everything. Towards the end it really hurt and I was yelling at them but they had to finish.

My ELCS was a dream after that and the spinla was very effective and comfortable.

YouOldSlag · 08/01/2013 16:31

*spinal

MurderOfProse · 08/01/2013 17:14

Oh definitely. I had really bad SPD with all my pregnancies and the moment they put the spinal in it was bliss. Even better once it wore off the SPD was much improved as well as the weight was gone.

And one of my favourite parts are things like the morphine later Blush - I've also had a few stitches and stitch removals and it's great having the morphine when you don't have a newborn to take care of! Obviously that won't apply here, but it's still nice.

tinkletinklestar · 08/01/2013 18:35

youthat sounds awful! Bless u.

murder that's really interesting, did you feel a great difference once the spinal wore off? The consultant anethitist told me the weight of baby, placenta &water will make a difference from the start

DolomitesDonkey · 08/01/2013 18:39

Yanbu. A spinal and morphine and a baby = pure bliss!

Highlander · 08/01/2013 19:04

You mightbget. Morphine in the actual, but you don't get a morphine drip fterwards. A diclofenac suppository s common, with oral codeine if required.

curiousuze · 08/01/2013 19:09

My favourite combo was epidural + gas & air. So much fun!

Moominsarescary · 08/01/2013 19:22

I had oramorph for a few days after my emcs that was nice.

I will be having g&a when they take the stitch out.

MurderOfProse · 08/01/2013 19:40

It was quite weird actually. At first I thought I'd been cured completely, because I felt no pain at all. I could lie on my side with no pillow! And this was when I could feel my legs etc again. But 12 hours after that it did start feeling uncomfortable again. All I can think is that perhaps although I could move things, there was still a bit of painkiller effect going on. All the same I'd say it was 80% better by the time everything had worn off. It gradually improved over the next few weeks and months.

I still get some discomfort just before my period is due every month because the relaxin surges then, but it's discomfort - i.e. I'm aware of it, it doesn't stop me from living my life. Heck, I ran a marathon 18 months after I'd been stuck in a wheelchair for four months in pregnancy thanks to SPD.

tinkletinklestar · 08/01/2013 20:45

Wow that's really reassuring to know that recovery can be so quick, it really is hellish to have. I want to be able to walk dd to pre school and play with her again.

Had my first steroid injection tonight am going back tomorrow for the second one and to sign consent forms.

The end is in sight!!

MurderOfProse · 08/01/2013 21:45

I think most women do go on to make a complete or almost complete recovery, although I do know anecdotally of one who did not. But yes, in most cases you do feel a lot better right away. I remember going out shopping 5 days post EMCS (nobody told me you shouldn't until I got a bollocking from the midwife who called round to find us out!) as the pain from the EMCS was nothing compared to how the SPD was and I was desperate to feel normal and just shop again!

chandellina · 08/01/2013 21:49

My spd was nowhere near as bad as that but it did run through my entire second pregnancy and then almost entirely went away after birth. Best wishes.
