To not take newborn to A&E?

I tipped the pram with my 4 week old baby in it over on its side a couple of hours ago. It didn't go over with a crash, but quite slowly because I was holding it at the time but the front wheel caught on a step and I wasn't strong enough to keep it upright.

He didn't fall out and was in the padded carry cot in his pram suit, tucked in tightly. He was awake but didn't cry at all, and has been fine since - alert, playing in his baby gym, feeding, wetting nappies, and now snoring in his Moses basket.

I phoned NHS Direct and they said it was best to take him in to my GP straight away, or if not then the paediatric A&E. I phoned GP surgery but they couldn't see me, however they thought the baby would be 'absolutely fine'. Now I'm not sure what to do. The A&E dept at my local hospital is always a complete nightmare and last time I was there it took 6 hours to be seen.

You are all such a comfort! Have decided to just keep an eye on the wee fella and stay at home. Is it bad that all your stories are cheering me up?

justfabulous if I thought there was an injury I'd endure the wait, yes of course. Just don't want to put him through the stress of it and/or exposure to viruses etc for no reason.

So many times people post because they appear worried but not worried enough to sit for hours as they don't want to have to wait. If you are willing to wait then the chances are you need/want reassurance or know there is something wrong.

If you are happy to observe him then you should do that.

can you feel any eggs/bumps on his head?

3smellysocks · 07/01/2013 18:36

My baby had a bump at a few weeks. It was a proper bump though. Felt awful but babe was fine. Had an over night stay in hospital and hourly checks. Great staff.

Ring your out of hours gp - your own gp number should trip to it when you ring ooh - or will give the number on a message.

They are usually situated right by a&e but you have an appointment so no waiting round with a baby and if you need to be seen they will pass you to the right people probably with no further wait - especially being a monday night.

The pram tipped slowly over as you tried to stop it, he was strapped into the carrycot, he didn't cry... I really can't see any need whatsoever so go to A&E and subject him & you to all of the bugs there.

If it makes you feel better - have a go with the crash test dummy... though DH is probably too big Grin stick with the teddy

No bumps on his head.

Just one thing - he wasn't strapped in ( just call me Peaches Geldof) because the carry cot has no straps, but was held in by the button down carry cot cover and hood, plus a blanket and a padded pram suit thing with furry hood
