Not a benefit-bashing thread at all, but I hate how smug these big families are when they say they are not on benefits like they are superior to people who are. In fact, this family get £180 a week in Child Benefit!

Story here: Big family

I think you must have missed it Mosman. It's never been included. You still get it as you would normally, but they reduce the amount of IS by the amount of Child benefit.
I have just checked my last letter from June last year and it was definitely the case up until then.

Mosman · 07/01/2013 15:19

Really ? Well that's not my understanding of how it was, I accept my memory may not be spot on it was a long time ago

IneedAsockamnesty · 07/01/2013 15:19

She just yelled at me again

And yes it is deducted, you get paid the cb separately to the IS usually on a different day but the amount of cb is deducted from the IS.

Tbf the gingerbread association just told me how much I would get for my circumstances, they didn't say how much I could get iyseim? And its as pile of shit that cb is deducted from income support!

AmandaPayne · 07/01/2013 15:48

MrsDeVere - Jesus, I almost closed this thread when I had read the OP, but I'm glad I read your post because I never knew that and it is shocking. So neither political party has done anything about it in their time in power? Would have been a simple change to help the poorest families and go straight to the relevant resident parent/carer so very targeted easily, no? Am I missing something.

Some days I despair, I really do.

smokinaces · 07/01/2013 15:51

That's awful re cb and is. They don't use cb in your hb calculations any more (since Nov 2009 I think) so why are they allowed to use it in is calculations? I never knew that, am frankly shocked.

JakeBullet · 07/01/2013 15:54

I didn't realise that either and it's shocking! Shock.

I get IS at the moment because DS is disabled.....it's increased because I get Carers allowance.....and so it seems they also deduct the CB.

Must get letter out and look....

I find that pretty shocking....so Carers and other low income families effectively lose their child benefit?

Meant to say the amount of IS is increased as DS is disabled but they deduct my Carers Allowance from it.....and apparently also CB.

Might write to my MP about this.

threesocksmorgan · 07/01/2013 15:56

JakeBullet and you lose your cares as well.

Dawndonna · 07/01/2013 15:57

Jake Read your letter carefully, you'll find that most of your Carer's Allowance counts as money you already have coming in, too!

DWP giveth with one hand whilst taketh with t'other.

JakeBullet · 07/01/2013 15:59

Didn't realise/think about this.

Knew the Carers was taken not accout...what is the bloody point of it al.

JakeBullet · 07/01/2013 16:01

God these politicians (and I include the last lot too) really are scumbags aren't they?

Dawndonna · 07/01/2013 16:02

Aww, but poor old Gideon and his Mrs have 'given up' their Child benefit!

AmberSocks · 07/01/2013 16:06

hammers the country is overpopulated but its because people are living longer, its overpopulated with old people.

IneedAsockamnesty · 07/01/2013 16:11

Jake IS don't take all your CA I think they only take half of it the same as HB do.

Moominsarescary · 07/01/2013 16:23

Didn't realise that, is it true you can keep all child maintenance now if your on income support ( if your lucky enough to receive it!)

When I was on income support you could only keep the first £10 a week

WildWorld2004 · 07/01/2013 16:28

OP i actually agree with you. I am not benefit bashing as i am on benefits but there was a story in another newspaper applauding this family coz they didnt claim benefits. To me child benefit is a benefit. It is financial help that you get from the government that you had to apply for.

The newspaper was the daily mail who love nothing more than to benefit bash.

IneedAsockamnesty · 07/01/2013 16:31

Well more than half I think they leave you with about £13 of it but that's going off the top of my head.

For ages I've been going on benefit threads trying to explain to those who use the online calc and then declare that they would be rich or there neighbours sisters hairdresser dog walkers girlfriend is loaded because she's raking it in on benefits.

And they never ever get it. Some benefits cancel out others some are passport benefits to others and even those passported to may be deducted by some.

The two fav's appear to be HB, WTC,CB and CA

CB is deducted by IS as a guideline with IS everything is taken into account as money already coming in apart from maintainance as the IS sum for your age is all you will be allowed to keep.

CA is taken into account and either fully or partially deducted by every single other benefit inc WTC and CTC

Any higher sums of benefits you receive for a disabled child are not protected from means testing apart from DLA so they are fair game in income assessments inc by HB

Maintainance and sever disablement element of WTC and CTC are even taken into account by legal funding.

I have a friend whose a single parent to two kids one is disabled her maintainance never gets paid to her ever but she cannot afford to go back to court to get a none mol ( domestic violence related)and tenancy transfer as her child's disabilitiy premiums and the not received maintainance are included in her legal aid assessment yet they don't deduct any amounts that she has to pay out for essential disability services like carers ect. She only earns about £99 a week.

WildWorld2004 · 07/01/2013 16:36

My child maintenance or child benefit were not taken into account when i was on IS. Maybe it has changed since i claimed it last 3 years ago.

IneedAsockamnesty · 07/01/2013 16:40

Your maintainance wasn't but your CB would have been.

CB still gets paid but it gets deducted from IS so you may not have realised it was being deducted.

AmberLeaf · 07/01/2013 16:43

I'm not surprised so many people don't know about the CB/IS thing.

I remember someone saying something about CB going up and I said 'not for me, if CB goes up, then my IS will just go down accordingly'

Carers allowance is about £58 per week, if on IS you get aboiut £30ish per week of it, the rest is deducted.

Dawndonna · 07/01/2013 16:46

Amber last year, Carers was 55 quid. I lost all but 13.

AmberLeaf · 07/01/2013 16:46

If you get income support, you will get a letter breaking down the amounts.

It will say the gov sets x amount per week to live on.

Other money coming in £xx CB

This amount will be deducted off your income support.

Has always been this way, even though CB is paid seperately.
