I took my DD(7) to visit a friend who is in hospital in another town, having chemotherapy. She just stays an hour because the child tires easily.I am not allowed to stay and usually pop for a coffee or to the ASDA opposite the hospital to kill the time.
Anyway today I had my coffee and still 20 minutes to spare so I went into ASDA wandered round and picked up a few items and went to the self service checkout. One of the items came up with 'unexpected weight , wait for assistance' (or somesuch) so I waited and waited and waited (at least 7 or 8 minutes I would think).Eventually I picked my goods up and put them through on the next machine and paid .i was just picking my bag up , the when an ASda assistant arrived and said in a confrontational way 'did you leave this machine' I said 'yes' it got stuck, and I couldn't wait any longer because I am in a hurry'
She said quite confrontationally 'well you have been reported to the Police for shoplifting' ( there is a police desk near the door (nice place!!))
I pointed out that I had paid for the goods .Yes she said but the police class it as a 'walk off and that is shoplifting' By then everyone was turning round to look at me. She was waving a receipt at me that the original machine had printed off (I am wondering if it automatically sends message to teh police desk near the door) well I said I have done nothing, and if you have made a report to the police then that's your problem. 'No she shouted after me 'It's YOUR problem'
I was really embarrassed and humiliated by this bonkers woman. DH who many many years ago was a supermarket manager said she was completely bang out of order, and encouraged me to ring up ASDA and complain. Now I have cooled down I feel a bit bad as I don't like getting people in trouble.

I worked in ASDA once for 20 minutes and it was deemed too much hassle to print me out a name badge so I was given one saying 'Tracey'.

Hmm

Nothing wrong with Tracey, it's a lovely name. But it isn't my name.

Then they moaned when I ignored people when they called me.

realcoalfire · 06/01/2013 17:34

the thing is she knew I had paid at the second machine.I really don't get it.

Yesmanticlimatic I should have said 'I'll wait for the police to arrive'. It's a shame I didn't think of it!

Asda staff always wear ID badges, as do most supermarkets staff. Well they do round these parts.

I think an ID badge need not necessarliy carry your full name. I would not be happy with any customer strolling in, finding my name, and then where I live and then being able to work out what shifts I was working and when my house was empty.

I imagine there is a reason why call centre workers only ever give you their first name.

I'm possibly over thinking these things. But I believe retail workers are deserving of some privacy.

complex
I have to wear a badge in store, up to a certain level it's first name only -no problem, management it's full name

so I made one up Grin

but back to the original post

a walk off is when 2 people go through a checkout, scan the items -one says, I'll go and start putting this in the car while you pay, leaving the other one at the checkouts

the one left to pay then has either got a card that declines or not quite enough money, I'll just run after the partner and get some cash, his card etc and low and behold the shopping has long gone

happens very rarely as people are pretty wise to it but the odd inexperienced cashier gets caught out by it

absolutely complain,

to challenge a shoplifter they have to have seen you select the goods, conseal them, then not take their eyes off you until after you have gone past the last point of payment

erm, you paid for the stuff???
she is completely in the wrong

I Never ever use self service tills, they are the work of the devil.

They always take way longer than a human and crash if I look at them.

TWinklyLittleStar · 06/01/2013 17:51

That woman is a fucking idiot.

If I read your OP correctly, then the machine wasn't working properly so you paid at another one, yes? How the fuck is that shoplifting???

financialwizard · 06/01/2013 17:57

Nutcase. The Asda employee, not you.

Chunkymumma · 06/01/2013 18:03

Mad psychotic bitch. Definitely make a complaint, and stress how humiliated and embarrassed it made you feel. Fucking cow, hope she gets the sack!

ddubsgirl · 06/01/2013 18:46

i work for asda and she needs retraining! no till is sent to any kind of police! lol you had the receipt there should have been someone on the self serve tills at all times, sometimes it does take awhile for the person to get to you as often 1 person for all the ss tills and if they all having problems-often people going through with stuff that is tagged, the weight thing often you just need to move stuff in the bag so it weighs it correctly.
