To Change DS's middle name?

Fabuloo · 05/01/2013 10:30

DS is 2. His first and middle names are not traditional names, his first name is more of a 'nickname-name' and his middle name is unusual... I'm not sure what possessed me/us to do this, perhaps pregnancy hormones...

Anyway I would like to give him a more traditional middle name which he can use if he wishes when he is older but DH has said no way - unless it's his own middle name which is Patrick, so it's that or nothing.

I'm not keen on this name for personal reasons, aibu to expect DH to compromise more on this? Please no lectures on our choice of names, I realise in hindsight that we could have chosen better.

to say Patrick or nothing is harsh. he'd be willing to change it to Patrick, so he can't say then that he's not happy about changing the name (that'd be illogical...)

If you agree then to change it, you can do it anytime, and I can see why you'd rather do it now then wait until he's older (or for him to change it), but beware that your DS's current name will be always on his birth certificate and both original and new middle names will always have to be recorded on any paper asking for any previous names! which is a hassle for Ds.

I'd add another middle name instead.

(I would actually like to know his names, they may not be as "bad" as you think! Smile)

stop messing with his names. you gave the child stupid names. more fool you. let him choose his own when he's older.

amazingmumof6- I'll PM you Smile

I like James as it's been used in my family for generations but DH says no way Sad, not sure if he is just being stubborn or I am being pretty unreasonable.

peaceandlovebunny - I wouldn't say they were stupid names, unlike your rude comment, just unusual.

I think it's too late tbh. The names you gave him will always be on his legal documents, so will always be his names, regardless of what you actually call him on a day to day basis. I think you are just setting him up for years of having to explain to schools/doctor's and later on banks/employers why he has a completely different name on paper to the one he is actually called.

If the first name isn't too bad, I say live with it. If it is really bad (am dead nosy, would like to know too), then you might consider it worth the hassle of changing.

Either way if dh says no then you can't change it against his will. Both parents must agree.

fedupofnamechanging · 05/01/2013 11:48

Meant to say that your dh is being unreasonable about the choice of name - if he agrees to a change, then it must be something you both like and agree to. If he doesn't agree to any change then i think you are stuck with how things are.

Fabuloo · 05/01/2013 11:49

I am happy with his first name, it's not weird or stupid at all, I would just like to give him a more traditional middle name. I'm not sure of the legalities, but I imagine it would be fairly straight forward...?

What if you just never used the name? I think the additional hassle for your DS versus the amount it's ever used is not really worth it.

HollyBerryBush · 05/01/2013 11:59

Let him change it when he's older.

Although as an aside I really do think that registrars should talk parents out of unusual spellings and the plain daft.

shesariver · 05/01/2013 12:02

Middle names never really get used so I dont think it matters so much. And if you still like his first name thats all that matters! but go on what are the names?

WhySoSirius · 05/01/2013 16:33

In agog with nosiness about the name!!!

catgirl1976geesealaying · 05/01/2013 16:55

Can you not add Patrick and James?

My DS's middle name is Boris though, so don't take advice from me Grin

it's impossible trying to second guess what name your child might like when they are older. If he doesn't like what he has, he can change it himself.
