I saw your comments on the degrees AIBU thread but wasn't sure if you'd still be watching it.
Has your son considered a career in accountancy? I started as a trainee accountant at 18 from alevels. It's a standard entry method but doesn't get enough press.
You study for the AAT qualification for two/three years before moving on to ACA which is the chartered accountancy qualification that a graduate would start at. In 4 - 6 years he could be a fully qualified chartered accountant without uni debt and having earned all of that time. Depending on his contract he could be qualified and earning c£30k at 22.
There are accountancy firms everywhere that offert this method, you're not just limited to the bigfour in London.
If you Google AAT and ICAEW you can have a look at the type of training available.
