I'm just too stupid and I can't do maths! I'm doing a diploma level 3 in care and I've passed the English easy Peasy then I went on a short maternity break to have my now 5 month daughter. Now I need to get through the maths I can't revise as my daughter doesn't sleep and what's worse is I have no clue on the questions! Volume, fractions , algebra ! I just am never gonna do it . Aibu thinking that it's impossible? Others from my group have done it but got hours and hours of one to one help but I have my 5mo who is exclusively breastfed and I have no one to leave her with and if I take her with me I still won't be able to concentrate on crap I don't no anything about anyway!

Anyone who understands what 100 is can understand percentages

Trouble is, a lot of today's teachers were children in the 80s and early 90s, when primary teaching was quite frankly, shit. They can't help that, but they do need to fill in the gaps effectively rather than simply saying, "Oh I was never taught that."

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 04/01/2013 18:50

Oooh kim I used to do a great fractions lesson with that very question. With real chocolate and everything Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 04/01/2013 18:52

Ooh, kim, I can do that one! Both!

My teacher in Y3 used apples

I must say I dislike these excessively blathery questions.

It should just say:
A man consumes 14g of sodium in a week.
The recommended limit is 10.5g.
By how much has he exceeded the limit ? A,B,C,D

Is it 25% then? Thank god for multiple choice!
I know how you feel though, i really struggle with maths, starting way back from my earliest memories of school. I had to do a drug calculation test for work (nurse) when i was on maternity leave so I was up and running when i returned to work. It was so hard for me (and i was able to use a calculator) my amazing husband coached me and I had to just use any time i could when my DD was having her naps during the day. I was so thrilled when I passed though, so do take heart and battle on as you will be so proud of yourself when you pass.

I looked into a career change recently and was put off by the numeracy test i would have to do. I was absolutely horrified that i would not be allowed my trusty calculator and have decided I can't put myself through that right now.
I have felt like the village idiot all my life because of my shit maths ability, and feel it has really held me back. Sad

Hello Xmasfun. Is it the keyskills level 2 in numeracy you need to complete? I am an assessor for diplomas and apprenticeships and these are the websites we recommend candidates use for revision. Lots of practice of previous tests will help boost your confidence and get you back into the swing of doing the maths.

It's worth remembering as well that you do not need a really high score to pass. It is usually around 60% or around 25 out of 40 to pass the test.

I know it can be really daunting but I'm sure you will be fine, good luck

Oh bugger I thought I had got that right Blush See I told you I was shit Ha Ha. But seriously I don't get it.

fixarupa · 04/01/2013 19:50

Ah I didn't read the bastarding question properly! now I get it. Xmasfun you have my sympathies and I wish you all the best. x

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/01/2013 20:00

Fixarupa
Its 33%

Think of it this way - the question is asking what share or fraction is 3.5 of 10.5 so you can look at how many lots of 3.5 are there in 10.5

3.5 +3.5 +3.5 =10.5

So there are 3 lots of 3.5 in 10.5

So each lot of 3.5 is 1/3 or 33% of 10.5

The maths calculation to find how big a fraction something is of something else is to divide the portion by the whole thing
so
3.5 /10.5 = 0.3333 = 33% = 1/3

Ahh this thread has been so useful for me (numeracy QTS tests coming up!), especially the poster who linked up to "Numeracy Tests for Dummies", thanks everyone Xmas Grin

FutTheShuckUp · 04/01/2013 20:18

Its all in the teacher imo.
I have always struggled with maths like nobodys business. On my access course I was like wtaf how am I ever going to do this? So I asked and asked and asked again and my tutor explained as many times as it took until I understood.
