McNewPants2013 · 03/01/2013 22:09

My father has decided that as a joined birthday presents for DS and DD he would pay for a family hoilday inbetween birthdays ( which are 3 weeks apart). All great no problems there.

but aibu to dismiss a caravan hoilday. I have no problems with caravan hoildays i have been a really enoyed it preDC, but the weather atm i am thinking it would be a wash out with heavy rain

Have a look at Siblu. We had a great week near Bordeaux last year.

Use Tesco vouchers and MN discount to keep it within budget if necessary.

thekidsrule · 03/01/2013 22:26

ive stayed in many carvans on havens, butlins etc

would rather be in a caravan than a butlins "apartment"

they are fab and havent had a bad one yet

all mod cons, recently stayed in one proper gas central heating, bath, full double glazing, full size oven

the single beds can be narrow though,so i always try and bag the double

yabu imo

enjoy,free holiday,nothing to loose

I can understand your concerns about climate change, I've just been stood outside in a nightshirt and it doesn't feel cold, in fact I've known cooler summer nights Hmm

I don't think this should stop you going on a caravan holiday though. It might rain, it might not, wear waterproofs if it does. How will you get there? If by car can you take games/books to keep the DC occupied/entertained if it's torrential rain.

No such thing as bad weather, just bad preparation/ clothes.

McNewPants2013 · 03/01/2013 22:29

feeling more positive now.

this is a hoilday for the kids and i know they will love haven and this is a lovely thing for my dad to do as otherwise we wouldn't be going nowhere.

My mum has a static caravan on a site in Whitby. It's great fun, children love it. It has 3 bedrooms, and possibly more space than her actual house.

TuftyFinch · 03/01/2013 22:41

Bournemoth's always sunny. I've seen a poster on the train.

Agree with thekidsrule on the single beds. They are more like shelves, I keep nearly falling out. Son 2 did fall out one night, then went back to sleep underneath the bed - I went in the morning and couldn't find him!

YABVU - caravans are great - we keep looking at going abroad, but can't face the airport with two small kids.

If your kids are very young though, try parkdean rather than Haven - they are a lot nicer (and cleaner). My kids are 2 and 4 and love it. We have been to Haven a few times, and always find the entertainment too loud an impersonal if you are relying on it because it's raining - I think they are probably better for kids who are 8+

Watch Sightseers, a newly-released film, possibly not in every cinema, but an interesting take on caravanning.:o

fanoftheinvisibleman · 03/01/2013 22:53

All our holidays are caravan holidays since ds born and I lost over half my wage!

We usually go late May/early June to the South West and have had some scorchers worthy of abroad and breath takingly pretty to boot. Smile

thekidsrule · 03/01/2013 22:57

go on op i can tell your warming to the idea now Wink

take loads of cartoons of juice, snacks etc otherwise you will be bankrupt with-in a day

and you can always use the caravan as a base and sight-see the area to,as always based in tourist locations, well the one's ive been to anyway

enjoy

Do you have a choice of site and company? You can can't go wrong with an indoor pool in the UK.

We went to a large Haven in Wales once and stayed in one of their Butlins type apartments, the mobile homes looked better! It was August and pissed down nearly every day, its the UK who knows what will happen ;) It was an enjoyable holiday still. We used the evening kids entertainment, it was nice for our kids to have a dance while we had a drink. We mainly used it as a base to explore the area, which was far cheaper than using even the cheapest B&B for us. I wouldn't rush back but the kids enjoyed themselves and we did plenty of none Haven things.

When the children were young and I was a SAHM I took them to many places by myself. Pontins, Butlins, camping in fields, camping in 4* sites, nice hotels, Travelodge and never had a crap time. If its your opportunity of a holiday I would take it, look at the local area and start planning how you will spend the time.

McNewPants2013 · 03/01/2013 23:00

Sounds a good idea shopping before we go, being having a look and tenby looks good.

One of the best family holidays we have done was a sun newspaper £9.50 holiday to prestatyn haven caravan park a few years ago. It was all we could afford (& I hate reading the sun!!) & it was wonderful, the kids were 2 & 3 & they adored it. I didnt enter the main complex building unless I absolutely had to & we spent all our time in the play park & swimming pool & chilling in the caravan once the DD's had gone to bed watching the local "wildlife" go past...

go for it - I think you'll have a lot of fun
