to keep dd2 in her cot for the foreseeable future

not like, all day or anything, obviously.
dd2 is 2. she is a bit of a sod rather spirited in her attitude towards life, but oddly does sleep pretty well. she has not yet attempted to climb out of the cot, nor has she requested a Big Girl's Bed.

A friend expressed her horror that DD2 is still in a cot. I had planned to keep her there as long as possible, given that the second she's in a bed she'll no doubt be in and out all night long. IABU?

My boys were in cot beds until they were 3yrs. DD is 2 in a couple of days time, and I have no plans to move her into a bed anytime soon. She likes her cot, it's cosy, but plenty big enough, .........why make life more difficult than it needs to be?

YANBU, there is no rush.

nocake · 02/01/2013 21:29

DD is nearly 2 and will be staying in her cotbed for as long as possible. There's no reason to move her. She's safe and comfortable in there.

BinksToEnlightenment · 02/01/2013 21:41

I thought they had to be moved when their shoulders got above the level of the bars?

I would be very happy to be wrong about that.

CoolaYuleA · 02/01/2013 21:48

They don't have to be moved when their shoulders are above the level of the bars Binks - think you may have got that from me, but slightly misinterpreted what I said.

When their shoulders are above the rail they are tall enough to climb out - it doesn't automatically mean they will, just that they physically can, should they try. Not all children do try.

DD's shoulders are above the cot rail, but so far she has never tried to climb out. I also think she is foiled by the sleeping bag as she can't get her leg up. I know she can climb something that high, but as yet she hasn't made the connection between climbing the furniture downstairs little sod and the cot side. The minute she does swing a leg up then the sides will have to come off.

Until then she's staying in her cage cot. Grin

Dc1 stayed in her cot till she was 3 and then we converted into her bed. Am hoping dc2 stays there as long but he's an active little bugger so unlikely to happen. Sod what anyone else thinks.

EasilyBored · 02/01/2013 21:59

DS is staying in his cot until he can climb out. He hasn't figured out the vertical climb yet, and the sleeping bag restricts his mobility a bit, so im hoping for at least another year (he's 1).

notengodinero · 02/01/2013 22:02

I moved DS1 when he was 2y5m as he started to climb out. I avoided it for as long as possible as I knew it wasn't going to be fun, and it wasn't!

He went from a THREE HOUR nap to NO BLOODY NAP in one fell swoop, twas a very very sad day!

DS2 is even worse in terms or climbing and general physical madness. He's only 14m but i have a feeling he'll be launching himself out of his cot much earlier Xmas Sad

OP your friend is mad. If your DD is happy and safe in her cot, keep her there for as long as possible!

BinksToEnlightenment · 02/01/2013 22:05

Thanks, Coola. It wasn't what you said - I heard that somewhere so I'd started saving for a toddler bed.

He's shown no interest in climbing out at all though, so it's a relief to hear I can leave him in there longer.

It's the only place he just stays still!

BinksToEnlightenment · 02/01/2013 22:07

He's trapped in a bag too! I hadn't thought that would impede his climbing.

Phew! This is great news.

Startail · 02/01/2013 22:33

DD stayed in her cot until she was 3 but with the side down from well before she was two, because the little monkey vaulted out.

Hand each side of the corner and jump, she showed me. Clearly far too easy to catch her toe and land in her head.

sweetkitty · 02/01/2013 22:37

I don't understand why people put 18 month olds or younger in beds? Fair enough if you have pole vaulters but if they don't climb out why so early?

All the DDs were almost 3 before they came out their cot, DD1 was over 3, DS is 2.7yo and still in his cot, he could climb out it no problem but doesn't.

Mosschopz · 02/01/2013 22:45

The only reason we took the sides off DS's cotbed was both our backs were knackered from lowering him in every night. Returning him to his bed several kicking and screaming times per night lost its novelty pretty quickly!

MummytoMog · 02/01/2013 22:55

DD scrambled out of her cot at eighteen months - I'm very jealous! DS is still comfortably ensconced and will be until he can escape or is five or so...

Zimbah · 02/01/2013 22:56

YANBU. I dread the day when 19mo DD2 learns to climb out of her cot, she's fairly tall for her age and loves climbing, and can easily get out with the aid of a toy (so she doesn't have any in there). I am pretty sure that the end of the cot will mean the end of naps, oh the horror. Frankly if I could get a super-size cot with a crank mechanism for raising and lowering the toddler it would be ideal.

mrsjay · 02/01/2013 23:01

dd2 was in a large cot till she was about 2 she was comfy leave her till she is 5 ready

sweetkitty · 02/01/2013 23:03

Mine all had dropped naps before the went into a bed so by the time bedtime came they were so tired they didn't bother getting out of bed, am hoping DS is the same.

Pascha · 02/01/2013 23:05

The only reason we are taking the side off the cotbed soon is because DS needs to be ok with a bed when we go on holiday. He wouldn't be bothered about it otherwise.

Luciana123 · 02/01/2013 23:07

DS is 3 and is still in his cotbed. I'm not moving him until I have to as if he wakes too early he will play happily and look at his books and doesn't try to get out. I don't really see why it matters. On holiday he sleeps in a single bed and that's fine too. Does it really make any kind if difference to anything? If they sleep well than that's your answer, surely?

Luciana123 · 02/01/2013 23:08

Pascha get some Dream Tubes.

Pascha · 02/01/2013 23:41

Thanks, I will look into those.
