To think a CHILD of compulsory school age

Should not be charged adult price for their journey to school?

DD year 11 travels to school by train and bus, now for the last two terms of school has to pay adult price as she's had her 16th birthday.

This year is also the first year that have to stay in compulsory education until end of year 13.

Why on earth do they have to pay adult price to get to and from school? They're not earning, and there is no difference in her income from September to now.

Parents with summer born babies (July and August) I know there are many debates of the disadvantages of being born in the summer - I've found you an advantage they're classed as a child until they have completed their education!

I'll rephrase, if they pass A Levels or Level 3 equivalents before they are 18 they are free to go to work without the education caveat

EMA was supposed to cover this for poorer families. If anyone knows how £20 child benefit can cover fares to college, lunch, clothing everything please let us know.

YABU.

I had to pay adult price from age 10 as I was travelling in peak time Hmm so if you've got this far on half fares you've done well.

Child benefit isn't supposed to be for bring up a child and paying for everything - I don't know anyone who could apportion the £20pw that way - it is an allowance for the principle carer or guardian - there is no caveat attached on how it should be spent.

www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/cbtmanual/cbtm01020.htm

Child Benefit is a tax-free, non-means-tested benefit, administered by the Her Majesty?s Revenue & Customs (HMRC), paid to people who are responsible for, or treated as responsible for children or qualifying young persons.

All children of compulsory school age should not be charged full price for anything other than food and theme parks, that work on hight.

The days when most 14yo could earn a reasonable amount of money have long gone.
School, exams, Health and safety how many of us use random teen babysitters?

There are a few free paper rounds, but very few people now have a daily paper or milk delivered, both things local boys did when I was a teen.

You had to be 16 to do the royal welsh show catering 30 years ago (although both girls I worked with lied).

If there is a reduction for a 7 yo there should be a reduction for a 16 yo who's studying for GCSEs.

Personally I think there should be a reduction to 19 now the school age has been raised, but at least 16-18 can work if they have time without huge restrictions.

A lot of schools are now charging for school bus journeys that used to be free. And sixth formers charges have gone up. I think the problem comes with the different rules for different authorities. And different discounts. I agree that discounts aren't always advertised.

£20 CB is for the eldest, and don't forget, some families it stops in a couple of days.

Regardless of age, if a person is still in compulsory education, they should be treated the same in regards to fares. I really don't know how they are able to get away with it. A school child, is a school child regardless of age. They are still dependent on others for their financial care. Op how about emailing the transport company and imply they are discriminating her against 15 year olds in her year group Wink They will probably laugh, but until you try you never know.

Are they much stricter on buses now? In the late 1990's I looked young so I always got child fares on the buses until I went to university at 18 years and 4 months old! I was short and didn't wear make up though. They never asked so I didn't tell!
