to expect the BBC to provide a copy of 'How Safe are Britain's Roads?'

Excellent two-part series saying much of what I'd like to say about safety to my driving pupils (and the rest of UK drivers).

Tried all legit ways of getting a copy - including contacting BBC. No dice.

First class Public Service Broadcasting that we pay our licence fee for. Couldn't they even just post it on YouTube? There's plenty of 'Motorway Cops' stuff there I note.

Name and shame!

But in the mean time by any chance did anyone happen to make a recording I could have?

no sorry,

was that the one with autistic driving instructor?

HollyBerryBush · 01/01/2013 23:34

IF you google it is on iplayer and you tube but ICBA to link it you cant look for it

ifancyashandy · 01/01/2013 23:39

Who made the programme? Was it the Beeb or another production company? They can't just give you a copy of it - there are a million rights and payments issues tied up in a production.

dayshiftdoris · 02/01/2013 00:12

I used this at university

www.boxofbroadcasts.com/

Not sure if you can access it as an individual user but if you are a student or know a student then their uni will prob be signed up

Itsnotahoover · 02/01/2013 00:21

If you google it, there's both parts available on the net.

Avuncular · 02/01/2013 00:23

So what? infancy

We the licence payers have already paid for it! All I want is a copy for educational purposes.

And the government are spending squillions on road safety; road safety Education is supposed to be one of their top priorities.

Why does no one want to help?

... is it just because road safety is mere entertainment?

BBC referred me to a 'bbcactive' company called Pearson.

[end of rant]

Does autism cause an increased desire to avoid road deaths - I forget now?

..... If so then it probably was that one thanks

No, avuncular, the licence fee has paid for it to be broadcast an agreed number of times and be made available on iplayer etc as negotiated. There will be agreements with various rights holders for use of the music, for example.

For the bbc to be able to do whatever it felt like with the final programme, such as giving you a copy to use in your business, would likely mean the rights payments would have been very much higher.

Avuncular · 02/01/2013 00:50

Thanks easy

What a delicious can of worms this is opening up!

And I don't expect to make a single penny from using this, but at £1,000,000 per death or serious injury avoided, there's a mere £55 million per day of UK taxpayers money to be saved here!

Take that out of your wallet and burn it!

I don't see a can of worms? The bbc commissioned a show and broadcast it. If it was produced in-house, there will have been external rights holders involved in some way, at a minimum for any music used. If it was an outside production, the bbc can only do with it what was agreed in the initial contract. They don't own the show, they simply bought the rights to broadcast it a number of times.

You want them to do something they don't have permission to do.

Pearson are not a BBC company, they are a publisher. They have a contract with the BBC to produce various educational materials, which I think use (or have used) the BBC Active branding.

Avuncular · 02/01/2013 01:33

Well maybe can of worms was the wrong term to use.

I'm grateful to you for your knowledge and patient response. I appreciate Auntie BEEB is not now what I grew up thinking she was.

What concerns me is the commercialisation of safety information. Yes I do admit that someone has to pay my 'wages' too as a safety professional.

What I suppose has been frustrating me is the difficulty of actually tracking down the people who can provide me a copy. I suppose I'll just have to go through the slog of finding out who made it etc etc.

BTW I do actually think this is important enough for me to shell out some of my hard-won cash to acquire.

I'm actually giving some of my own time as a 'freebie' to deliver a safety seminar to a national safety charity in a few weeks time.

ah Hoover(not) it's there now.

Wasn't last time I looked. Panic over. Sorry for all the fuss, but I've learned a few things about copyright etc in the meantime!
