to ask at what age should a woman no longer have long hair?

I love my long hair and right now in my life mid-20s I wouldn't dream of getting it cut.

I had it shoulder length once and it made my face look fat. Seriously.

But is there an age where long hair on a woman really isn't suitable or perhaps would be considered as a little mutton dressed as lamb kind of thing?

Till she is 120! Bugger rules! I don't suit long hair as mine gets straggly. Lots of older women look amazing though. I have no idea who Liz Jones is either, nor any desire to find out Grin

NotGeoffVader · 02/01/2013 11:36

Oh dear. I'm over 40, wear my hair long in a ponytail, and Emily Strange T-shirts with bootcut jeans. ...

I reckon each to their own.

Hairstyles don't work on me as my stupid cowlicks just throw any cut out after about 30 mins. Plus I can't be arsed with straightners, spray and all that malarkey all the time.

I think about 40/ 50ish, but it depends how styish the woman is as to how long she can carry it off.

I hate these 'age' rules women think they have to abide by. As in any age, if your hair looks healthy long, it's fine, no one looks good with straggly long hair.

anewyear · 02/01/2013 12:08

My MIL she 78, has gorgeous silvery/white short hair, It looks lovley,
hope mines like that when I a bit older than I am now Grin

handsoffmecrownjules · 02/01/2013 12:08

I used to go on (to myself usually) about how women over 30 shouldn't have long hair as it rarely suited anyone.....I then got my comeuppance when I got mine cut off accidentally when I was 29 (went to the hairdressers and said I wanted something different) and have had it sort of short ever since. I'm now 48 and now have it really short and have just had it bleached blond and a bit spikey....probably not what a woman in her late 40s should do at all, so who am I to judge! (But then I also have 2 yr old twins so am perhaps trying to regain my youth...?)
Actually I still think that some women look fantastic with long hair when they are older, but I also see many women in their 40s (one of my best friends included) who I know would look so much better with shorter hair. I also get a bit sick of magazines and the like who only seem to show models with long locks with the message that this is more 'feminine'. Each to her own I say...:)

LetsFaceTheMusicAndDance · 02/01/2013 12:09

Sorry if repeating but I haven't read the thread.

Yes there most definitely is a point at which a woman should have long hair cut short when she's over a certain age.

And I'd like to think we passed that point in the 1960s.

MardyArsedMidlander · 02/01/2013 12:30

I have short bleached white blonde hair. And if I thought it would go white naturally, I'd grow it long.
There is a woman I see in town who must be about 70- she is lightly tanned with very short bright orange hair. She looks bloody fabulous. Years ago, I remember that women had had to have a perm when they got to about 30- it was even more ageing.

tethersjinglebellend · 02/01/2013 12:38

Everyone knows that a woman should get her hair cut short past a certain age- about two years after she's had all her teeth out and got false ones for convenience. Say 45?

WinterWinds · 02/01/2013 12:51

I will keep my long hair as long as the condition allows, i'm in my late 30's and Its nearly down to my bum but also healthy, thick and shiny. i also keep on top of the greys!!!!
If at any stage its starts to look thin/wiry/brittle then i will have it cut but the truth is i just dont suit short hairstyles, have tried in the past and end up letting it grow out again!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 02/01/2013 13:01

I had short hair as a child / teenager. I did look like a boy (the hand-me-down boys clothes probably weren't helping, to be honest).

At school I had short dark hair and all the other girls had a yellow perm (was the 80s).

I grew it when I was 16, had it all cut off on a whim in my 20s, then grew it again and it's been long ever since.

My mum goes on and on about me getting "a nice short bob". I'm 38, apparently I'm too old for long hair. I ignore her. My hair grows so quickly, when I have it short I have to keep going to the hairdresser. When it's long I just trim it myself. It's thick, straight and shiny.

rubydoobydoo · 02/01/2013 13:28

I'm 34 and have long hair at the moment, I don't think it suits me any shorter than shoulder length. When I'm older i want to have crazy long white hair so i can channel my inner mad old cat woman!

Housemum · 02/01/2013 13:36

I'm mid 40's and had a short croppy style for years so have decided to grow it - hoping it will with the help of tons of conditioner be like the hair of my 20s, sort of Kirstie Allsopp-ish.

Conversely my 5 year old is the only child with above shoulder length hair in her year, she has a just chin-length graduated bob, v French style. Everyone knows her because of her hair and says how cute it is yet no one else has yet been brave enough to go for the chop!

DamnBamboo · 02/01/2013 13:37

Whatever age it is that she decides she no longer wants it long.

Is this a trick question?

VerySmallSqueak - I'm with you - 41 - long hair - interesting grey streak coming - looking hot I think! I also think it helps that as you get older your eyesight goes so you always look better to yourself than to others!! I had very very short hair for years - and I'm now sporting the same hair style I had at age 10 (then I got it cut like Princess Di for the Royal wedding), long again at 20 (art college years). Age 26 - 35 ish were the clipper years (very small children - with frequent nit infestations). Now it's down to my nipples! I can head bang properly again! Long hair rocks!

PretzelTime · 02/01/2013 18:28

I'm young-ish and my hair is kinda short. Maybe I'll grow it longer when I'm really old and it's white because that look is quite awesome.

She wore her hair up in a plait tied round her head, Swedish style
Ooo what does that look like?

SquinkiesRule · 02/01/2013 19:02

What is this MN haircut method that Folkelf speaks of? Is it a way of cutting your own hair?

trixymalixy · 02/01/2013 19:06

I want to be one of those old women who tie their hair up in intricate up dos. Guess I've got a while to practice as I'm crap at them just now!

FolkElf · 02/01/2013 19:07

It is Squinkies.

PackItInNow · 02/01/2013 19:10

Nope. There's no age limit for long hair. Just look as Yasmin Rossi in the M&S ads. I think she looks fab with her long, lovely whitish hair.

AlexanderS · 02/01/2013 19:19

I'm going to have a Judi Dench when I start turning gray. And start dressing like Felicity Kendal. They've done older age well. I won't be getting my cleavage out every five minutes like Helen Mirren, or wearing bright lipstick like..well, too many older ladies. I want to age gracefully and not cling to my lost youth.
