To find that Oxfam advert really annoying?

I know what she says is right, but it really irritates me.
I don't know if it's the content or the number of times it's shown, but it's not making me want to reach for my purse.

AIBU? How else can they attract money?

I hate the beginning where she's so excited to be going. If someone invited me to meet starving babies I would be a lot of things but excited wouldn't be one of them.

ConfusedPixie · 01/01/2013 23:11

Pixel: that's exactly what I said to dp about her excitement.

I hate the advert. Dp and I both refuse to give money to charities who run high profile advertising campaigns or those who pay people to cold call. I'd rather my money went to the people they said they were helping!

xameliax · 01/01/2013 23:18

Here is the YouTube link -

Oxfam comments on this too.

ChaoticintheNewYear · 01/01/2013 23:35

YANBU I hate that advert and the woman is just irritating.

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe · 02/01/2013 08:34

Oh, I see they didn't give her formula. Okay, that makes more sense - I don't understand why they aren't more clear about the specifics of what they have done?

I would be much more inclined to support any charity if they could tell me more about the specifics of how they work/spend money.

Vagaceratops · 02/01/2013 09:14

I am so glad I am not the only one who finds her patronising and smug.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 02/01/2013 09:21

Yanbu. For the price of the plane ticket and the recording equipment they r using they coulda brought all sorts with them! How the hell can someone sit there and watch and film that woman feeding those poor babies flour and water and not have helped. They coulda brought formula, bottles breast pumps and built that well instead. Not paid for the woman to go. And what about follow up care they never me ruin that. Who cleans the pump, fixes problems, etc

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 02/01/2013 09:30

And I'd also like to k ow why it is never mentioned about whether they provide these woman birth control of they wanted. It's all very well helping the babies but what about helping mums not have to go thru pregnancies that could kill them in their already fragile mal
Nourished states. They use the babies as that's what they think will get us dipping in our pockets but I'd wanna know what they are doing with the money and what their plans were as all these things r life long commitments and they never say that they r gomna continue to work on anythin,

bruffin · 02/01/2013 09:49

"Yanbu. For the price of the plane ticket and the recording equipment they r using they coulda brought all sorts with them"

Look the money was raised specifically for the ad, by a private doner, which i think is mentioned in the youtube link. The hope is the investment in the ad will raise more money, so say £100,000 investment in a tv may raise £1,000,000 (all numbers theoretical) They then have £900,000 to spend on the cause rather than £100,000

To be honest if you have questions you should ask the charity as the person did above who got a reply which answered a lot of their questions, rather than make assumptions of what is being and not being done. Adverts are just a few minutes long to get an awful lot of information in.

As I said above I dont like the ad and I wonder if they have made a mistake using that awful women and the way it is portrayed as an adventure at the beginning.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 02/01/2013 10:26

I didn't really understand the answer the waffly answer they sent to the poster though, it was the answers on the youtube channel that put it together a bit more for more.

Regardless I don't think it is a very well structured advert. What would have made sense to me is to use some of the waffling about an adventure time to explain more clearly how exactly the mother of twins had been helped, eg she didn't have enough milk but we did x and y to ensure she had more time to feed and now she DOES have enough bm (I'm still not all that clear on what x and y were in this case) and also, perhaps a text box to explain that the trip had been sponsored by an anonymous donor to show how Oxfam's money is spent, not taken out of donated funds.

Do the satellite stations screen for free though? Because that would really cost a fortune.

"Do the satellite stations screen for free though? Because that would really cost a fortune."

Again does it really matter if it raises a lot more money than it costs

Nanny0gg · 02/01/2013 12:29

But does it?

bruffin · 02/01/2013 12:55

Thats what we dont know, but a fr who spends their budget and doesnt raise enough money wouldnt keep their job very long
