To not appreciate massive bomb like fireworks...

Being on sale for the public to use in tiny gardens?

We were in last night as dd is 2. I fully expected fireworks obviously and some were lovely. Our next door neighbour put on a show in his 50ft garden that was practically professional in quality/ quantity (although he was pretty unorganised and im amazed he didnt blow himself or others up for the 20 mins they were on) I suppose and was far too large for its location. Some of the bangs were like bombs going off. They actually made furniture /house shake. Our dd was terrified.

I like fireworks, I think the public can have access to some but that its out of control with little thought for location, safety, or others. I'd rather see some of these in public town displays, but we had none.

Am I old? AIBU? Why aren't there more regs or something around them?

I don't like fireworks

VivaLeBeaver · 01/01/2013 09:02

There were some fireworks like that near us last night, at midnight!!!

The ground was shaking, much deeper, loud boom than with a normal firework.

I love fireworks but I agree it seems to be too easy for people to get hold of massive ones and no-one ever seems to get pulled up for letting them off in inappropriate places and at inappropriate times. When I organised Bonfire Night at school we had to abide by all sorts of guidelines, there isn't anything like that for private displays.

FridgeBenefits · 01/01/2013 09:05

I was going to start a thread this morning about this very thing!
Dh and I went to bed early last night, feeling ill.
Woken by 15 minutes of the loudest fireworks I've ever heard, followed by drunken singing Hmm

So, someone has a party, and actually plans to wake the rest of the neighbourhood, terrify the living daylights out of children and pets.
After the bombs fireworks have finished, all the local dogs start off twilight barking for the next half hour.

I am not a happy bunny this morning.

ImperialSantaKnickers · 01/01/2013 09:05

And inappropriate times includes the god almighty one that went off at 2.45 am this morning!

BikeRunSki · 01/01/2013 09:08

Fireworks here started last night at 11.50 pm and finished over and hour later. DD is teething molars and woke up wailing, got back to sleep at 4.10am. We live in the bottom of a valley and the sound of fireworks reverberates hugely.

Sirzy · 01/01/2013 09:09

I agree, it also scares me that people are letting them off at midnight on NYE when a high proportion of them are probably bladdered.

LaCiccolina · 01/01/2013 09:41

Dd plainly thought her world was exploding. We found her shivering with fright in bed. I so wanted to call police or go round but thought a) nothing would be done and b) obvs next door would be cross. Glad I'm not the only one who had a shite ny eve due to this :( so to speak!

Why aren't there more stuff around them? I really have no idea. If far rather big displays by councils than this any Tom dick n Martha arranging them.

We live in a tiny cul de sac and the neighbours opposite let off a series of the loudest fireworks I have ever heard in their tiny front garden. The was fuggy pall hanging over the whole close. You could not enjoy the spectacle for fear it may cause an accident or set fire to something.

We just spent ages comforting hysterical grandchildren who thought bombs were going off.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2013 10:18

On Nov 5th last year the neighbours let off one so loud it set car alarms off. Sad

Hulababy · 01/01/2013 10:21

Fireworks on and off round here last night, from about 9pm onwards. Some very very noisy ones which went off with an almighty bang. Seemed far loud bangs than normal. Last one went off about 1am and it was a whopper of a noise. Both me and Dh commented on the loudness of the deep bangs this year. I assume some new style ones then if others are thinking the same?

MrsMelons · 01/01/2013 11:06

They were still going off at 2.45am this morning round our way. Ridiculous even on NYE - midnight is fine but no need after that.

skratta · 01/01/2013 11:29

They're banned where we are (Connecticut, only allowed sparklers or fountain fireworks here, otherwise need a permit which is hard to get apart from the state displays) but that is, in my opinion, way too strict. From the years I lived in the UK, I'd say more regulations are needed on them- banning of larger fireworks, or fireworks which are louder than a set amount, from shops or from online sellers in the UK, and also making it a criminal offence in some cases (for instance, currently it's not a nuisance crime, so someone letting them off c.

Also, this might tell you more if it's criminal (for instance, NYE fireworks can't be let off after 1 am).

LaCiccolina · 01/01/2013 12:58

Very interesting had no idea about that link. They were bombing round us til gone 130am!

I feel sorry for people who had to get up for work this morning.

Lambzig · 01/01/2013 13:53

YANBU

We had really loud shake the house ones going off last night from 11.45 to 2.30. DS is 8 weeks and was wailing for an hour, so obviously scared. DD is nearly three and wet herself with fear and was hysterical, so her bedding had to be changed, it took an hour to get her back to bed and then I had to sleep in her toddler bed with her all night (I could hardy move by 6am) and move DS in her room with us. She is still jittery this morning and obviously very tired.

I think the really loud ones should not be on sale for domestic gardens.

missrlr · 01/01/2013 14:16

YADNBU

Ban the sale of these menaces for "home" use
Public displays only by license sounds like a sterling idea!
We went to a cracking display, 15 mins at midnight, perfectly fine lovely no more needed.

Might also reduce the number of irresponsible so and so's terrorising all and sundry humans, animals and belongings like!

We came home to eggs and remains of fireworks over the front of our house , so antisocial and rude.
