To let DD just eat what she wants, even if that is chocolate digestive biscuits?

Not strictly aibu, but DD (3) has been coldy/cough/bunged up for a good few days. Since Saturday she has pretty much eaten a few bits of ham, some bread and butter and chocolate digestives. She is miserable and tired as she wakes herself up coughing/snoring and I just can't tempt her with anything healthy or fruit and veg.

A bit PFB, but am I best to just let her get on with it while she is ill, not that I really have much choice? Likewise with sleeping, it's all gone to pot and any slight routine she had has disappeared.

Just hoping I'm not hindering her health really....
TIA

will she drink fruit juice ? tbh id let her eat what she fancies I hope she is better soon Smile

Ah, I understand where you are coming from. DS has chicken pox and I'm just delighted that he wants to eat anything, he is so clingy, itchy and miserable. For dinner he had cheese biscuits with butter!

I'd encourage some orange juice too. Is she drinking enough? Jelly is nice for a cold as is ice cream or freeze pops.

ImagineJL · 31/12/2012 21:30

Yes, when mine are poorly I abandon rules about food and sleep until I know they're well enough and are just faking it to get more chocolate!

SnookieSnickers · 31/12/2012 21:32

I would keep offering her things like fruit and toast but I definitely wouldn't worry about the biscuits.

Bought some juice today, she's not gone totally made for it. I'm working like mad at the moment, and DP is off so he has been in with her all day, and he is the one instigating the easy going approach. I think I will make some OJ ice pops if I can find some moulds. Sounds like a good idea. All she really is wanting to drink is milk. Her exzema is on a rampage, and I'm pretty sure it's because of diet, lack of sleep, and being rundown. It's so crap when they are ill.

Fresh fruit juice through a snazzy straw might work? My 3yr old has nutella on toast (wholemeal) when she's ill. Sometimes I can convince her to have sliced banana on it too - vaguely healthy I'd say. Otherwise yes, let her eat what she wants and perhaps give her a vitamin 'sweet' if you're worried (strawberry ones are like real sweets and are yum)

It's so crap when they are ill.

it is , yes snazzy straw and vitamins mine used to get 'jelly babies' when they were younger I got mine some vit c a few weeks ago and dd who is 19 said aww no jelly babies Grin

I do hope your little girl is better soon and try little juice and often and yoghurt is also good for them ,

DD1 (4.11) has been ill since Christmas too. She's usually an average sized nicely covered child, but she shocked me today. She's gone to skin and bone :( And so pale. She's not eating either. She doesn't even want treats. She just sips at the odd drink. I hate it. I really miss her being so loud and boisterous. I don't do the children being ill very well...

goldenlula · 31/12/2012 21:48

Ds2 has been like this since Christmas Eve, but his food of choice has been cucumber for some reason. He has hardly eaten much at all, today he actually asked for some soup, so I am hoping we are on right road now.

GrimmaTheNome · 31/12/2012 21:52

Other things that some kids like when off colour are breadsticks (or crisp-type things), a bit of heinz tomato soup -sometimes they feel like something salty after being poorly for a while.

But don't fuss about a balanced diet - so long as she's drinking plenty that's the most important thing.

HildaOgden · 31/12/2012 21:53

The milk will make her feel more bunged up,so if you can get other fluids into her it would be better. Its probably also making her feel full up.

Would she drink smoothies?Or sliced fruit...any type..to nibble on?Or cube it and spear it with cocktail sticks, she might pick at it that way.Put Vicks on the soles of her feet too to stop the night-time coughing.

Hope she feels better soon.

Yanbu, my four year old was ill and ate mostly rubbish for a few days. Don't see the big deal about forcing fruit juice, it's basically sugar water. Smoothies with whole fruit are much better.

nocakeformeplease · 31/12/2012 22:04

DS has been ill since Boxing Day and has pretty much lived on toast and cereal with the odd smoothie/fruit pot thrown in.
