To report this to the police?

Just been on our local buy/swap page and noticed an advert:
Wanted babysitter from 10pm til 8am on Hogmanay. For a 15 mo girl.
Accompanied by a gorgeous picture of a little girl.
Are these people nuts? They are asking for any Tom, Dick or Harry to look after their little baby overnight. Mental. I want to report them to the police. Im not one for thinking there are peodophiles lurking behind every corner but that is an awful big risk to take.

YANBU crb checks take bloody ages to come through.

yohohoho · 31/12/2012 08:37

I wouldn't do what they have done. BUT yabu for considering involving the police. What exactly do you want them to do? What crime has been committed?

pumpkinsweetieMasPudding · 31/12/2012 08:41

Me personally wouldn't hire a babysitter of this age without knowing them 1st.
But it's not an arrestable offence to advertise yourself as a babysitter so yabu

SoupDragon · 31/12/2012 08:44

I wouldn't bother with the police as no crime or wrongdoing has been committed.

I would be tempted to message the person and say "Are you fucking stupid??" though.

TheNebulousBoojum · 31/12/2012 08:47

SoupDragon, that's exactly what I thought. Tell the people who advertised why you think it is a bad idea. Far more logical than phoning the police about a legal act.

FolkElf · 31/12/2012 09:02

pumpkin I think you need to read the OP again Grin

soupdragon I think I'd be inclined to do the same.

I know that everyone is right and the police would have no remit as no crime has been committed, but I understand the OP's desire to tell someone who might be able to talk some sense into the parents because there seems to be very little time for them to find and vet someone.

And not everyone is that careful with their children.

"References cannot be checked in that time " if they work in a workplace that requires references and CRBs, like a nursery, creche, etc, that can be confirmed v quickly

I wouldn't post a photo Hmm but I didn't know our babysitter till I knew her. I get on well with my neighbours but actually IMO my children are safer with a HCP who has life support training, is young and fit, a background in that field etc.

Those of you who piously only have family/friends/neighbours they know to babysit, do you ask them for a CRB and to attend paediatric life support etc? I'm very friendly with my neighbours but how well do I really know them??? They're not likely to divulge their criminal pasts to me over the fence are they?

  • see there are pros and cons to both ways!
