to not replace the batteries in my doorbell?

So they ran out a couple of days ago. Before that the bell was always going for Mrs Upstair's Next catalogue deliveries ; the man to read the gas meter ; my DM just as I put DD down for a nap.

If anyone really needs me they knock, or phone me "oi, are you in, im outside?"

Be warned, I did this ten years ago (just while DD was a baby, and we needed every inch of sleep) and they've never been replaced Blush

But I can tell you it is perfectly possible to live for ten years without a bell!

Put the battery in temporarily on days you are expecting a delivery otherwise you end up having to go to the Post Office to collect it!

Mrsrudolphduvall · 30/12/2012 20:26

We have had 2 doorbell systems, neither of which have worked.

Luckily the postman has a very loud knock.
I don't mind taking in things, as the neighbours reciprocate...and I get more stuff delivered than they do!

This happen to ours, I took the doorbell down meaning to get batteries for it, and put it somewhere. 3 years on I still have no idea where it is. Wink

i don't have any door furniture. there's a letter box fastened to the wall but i only open it every few weeks. i don't like to be interrupted.

TheCatIsEatingIt · 30/12/2012 21:29

NOOOOO!!!!! It's People Like You who encourage the postman/pizzaman/long-awaited visitor to ignore the perfectly good working doorbell and knock on the door, which I can only hear if I'm in the front room, which I'm usually not. Drives me mad!

whois · 30/12/2012 22:08

Just remove the door bell button totally. It's very annoying when visiting someone and you don't know if the bell has worked or not when you don't hear anything.

Our doorbell hasn't worked in years.

Just means I look out for any expected visitors.

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/12/2012 22:21

When I worked nights I bought These just unplug them :)

This house didn't have a doorbell when we moved in 7 years ago and we've never had one installed. No regrets. It has a door-knocker which I can hear from most of the house.

louisea · 30/12/2012 23:51

Our door bell doesn't work. We have an internal door which is usually closed to keep in the warmth. Most people don't think to knock when they've rung the bell and not had an answer and even if they do I often don't hear it. I've been to the door on several ocassions to find cards have been left by postmen/meter readers even when I've been home.

One thing I've been shocked by lately is how expensive modern doorbells are. For example, the wireless ones: £30 or more. For what it does, I do think this is a lot of money, given that you can get a cordless telephone for less than this. For a button and a very electronic-sounding "ding dong", which we discovered couldn't even be heard if the TV was on a moderate volume.

I swiftly returned it to the small electrical shop, and asked for a bell with an actual metal dome. No wireless models, so out came a drill to install a nice black button by the door. Result: £15 saved, and a bell which is loud enough to be heard! (Although if I had my way, it would be an actual swinging bell with a clapper, like in the old days.)

Also, I do a job involving visiting clients, and I have noticed that 9 times out of 10 the doorbell can't be heard from outside, so you can't be certain if it has rung inside. A little light coming on is not conclusive!

Have they yet done an iPhone app: doorbell button makes your phone ring?

Fakebook · 31/12/2012 15:27

Our batteries get replaced everytime my dad visits which is every 2-3 months. Infact a lot of batteries get replaced when he's here. Yanbu.

PinkPepper · 31/12/2012 15:27

I'm with TheCat.
No one ever rings our doorbell they just go straight to bashing the glass paned door. Grr

FrustratedSycamoreSnowflake · 31/12/2012 16:04

thecatiseatingit you need to train your postman better, ours is well trained, he opens the outside do and either knocks on the internal door if item needs signature, otherwise he just leaves it it the porch.
Have to say, fedEx did one better earlier and knocked on the window. Grin
