To ask someone on Ebay to give clothing measurements

We all know that sizing is inconsistent between brands, right? Does anyone want to dispute that?

And that things like leg length can vary, too?

And that thickness of fabric can vary a lot, you ideally want to feel something up to see how warm it is, but weighing the item and comparing to something similar cut/length would be next best, no?

I want some spare PJ bottoms, thought I'd find something on Ebay. Sizing is fuzzy, "8-10", "12-14", "medium" etc. I asked Sellers for waist and inside leg measurements, along with weight of the PJ bottoms.

Replies:

(None)
"They are a 12-14"
"They are a small"
"I don't have a tape measurer or scales"

Who doesn't have a tape measurer? How do you correctly figure out the postage rate without some kitchen scales? Do they really want to sell these items?

Grrrrrr...

This would irritate me tbh.

Does it really matter if it's pj bottoms? Who cares if they're a few mm long or short.

MuddlingMackem · 30/12/2012 13:45

YANBU.

I carry a tape measure in my bag so that if I'm in a shop and see something that might suit one of the kids I can check inside leg, length of dress, etc. If it's for me I can hold it against me or even try it on.

You can't do that if you're buying online, and that should be one advantage of buying from eBay rather than, say, M&S. At least an eBay seller should be able to check those things if they're not already in the listings. Not having those types of measurements is one of the reasons I don't buy clothes online except from eBay. Grin

I don't care what the postage is as long as total price is something tolerable. Weight shows fabric thickness (I have a pair to compare to). I could ask "are they thin or thick" but that's subjective.

Leg length because many things for my waist size are too short for my legs, and I want to tuck the pj bottoms into my socks.

One reply said 78 cm length, which is 10cm long than my jeans! No problem just as long as they aren't very short. But waist maybe too small on those (good thing I asked, eh?)

If I was being truly fussy I'd ask about rise from crotch to waist, too.

I haven't seen local PJs that I like look of, for a price I want to pay. Last time I bought a set I had to buy (supermarket, no changing rooms) 3 different sizes before I found some that fit tolerably well (top still a bit small, waist just about not too big). And I don't need a top, just bottoms, so seems silly to buy a set when I just want bottoms.

Suppose this is why I'm not a fashionista, I am way too fussy.

Yanbu to ask, I always do if it's something like jeans, nice top or coat as I am tall and have orangutan arms. Equally though, if the seller can't be arsed I just don't bid/buy. It's their prerogative and if they have enough people bidding and buying, likely it's more hassle than its worth for them.

JazzAnnNonMouse · 30/12/2012 17:12

Yes, you're way to fussy.

oldraver · 30/12/2012 17:27

I think asking for clarification of actual size is ok. I buy a lot of European sized stuff and sellers are happy to measure stuff (as would I be) as they know that sizing is different

But as for asking for them to be weighed to find out thickness you are stark raving bonkers. And anyhow the nicest warmest finest fabrics are quite often feather light

bigbuttons · 30/12/2012 17:35

for 99p who cares!?

FeckOffCup · 30/12/2012 17:37

YANBU about measurements but YABU about weight. I've sold some clothes on ebay and I've never come across anyone needing to know the weight of a garment and I don't have scales apart from kitchen ones which are probably too small for clothes.

threepiecesuite · 30/12/2012 17:44

If you ony want a spare pair, and there's nourgency, why not just wait til you next need to visit a town and buy some in a shop? I've just got some fleecey ones in Tesco for £3. They were slightly long so I rolled them up slightly at the waist. Job done.
