To find letters from babies and toddlers written in the first person absolutely nauseating?

Just got the first batch of thank you letters from the youngest members of the family / godchildren.

Many of them aren't even speaking yet, but ALL of them have written to us in the first person, "humorously" retelling us their Christmas adventures at some length, poking fun of Mummy and Daddy etc etc etc.

It's just so utterly nauseating, but I can't quite put my finger on why. Is it all a bit PFB? (Our DS is 19 but I can't remember writing stuff like this -or receiving it - back in the 1990s).

I'd be so touched if a friend actually wrote back as herself, but no, a nice exercise in good manners and appreciation just becomes another opportunity to showcase your child Hmm.

For avoidance of doubt, I'm also nauseated by round robins and Christmas cards featuring pictures of the sender's children.

Oh lighten up, some of the best threads in classics do exactly that.

Like round robins it's only a crime if it goes on to two sheets and sends you to ZZzzzzzzz

I'm 56. My mum wrote letter from me to my gps in the 50s and I've written letters to my mum from my dds. My mum has also written letters from my soft toys to me since I left them with her when I left home and I've also written thank you letters to her from our dog. Grin I'm not sure what that says about us as a family!

YABU

SamSmalaidh · 29/12/2012 13:28

I would be very pleased to have received thank you letters from parents of young children within days of Christmas! YABU and very ungrateful.

giraffesCantFlyLikeReindeer · 29/12/2012 13:29

Yes it is a vomitey BUT I could sort of see myself doing it some times. If it was all the time then a big no no. Some people on my FB do it all the time

Sparklingbrook · 29/12/2012 13:29

Cheer up moody. At least you are getting a thank you. Wink

1605 · 29/12/2012 13:29

I am a Grinch, I know it Blush.

But when did it become so wrong to want a picture of the baby Jesus and not your godchild's newest sibling on the front of a Christmas card FFS?

YABU, the parents are still making the effort, they are exercising good manners in sending back a thank you note, personally I find the thank you cards from my 2 month old neice cute and I know my SIL has gone to the trouble to write it, think you are being a bit bah humbug

bluebiscuit · 29/12/2012 13:30

I find it a bit bizarre. I would just write "max likes the shape sorter" or something to that effect.

Allthenamesiwantaretaken · 29/12/2012 13:30

And the cat buys my Dh a fathers day card and writes it all by herself

LightTheLampNotTheRat · 29/12/2012 13:31

Agree. It sets my teeth on edge - yuk. I don't like people putting words into children's mouths - it's patronising and wrong.

TheProvincialLady · 29/12/2012 13:31

YANBU. Have you seen it on facebook too? A friend of mine set up an account for her baby and insisted on updating it frequently with such gems as "Today I had a poop in the LIBRARY during story time, which made mummy so embarrassed and all the other mummies laughed." I had to block the baby in the end. I never thought I would need to block a baby. And yes, every year we get a Christmas photo card of this child and her siblings.

Findingmyself · 29/12/2012 13:32

Someone on my FB friends does that as her statuses, ie writes them as if one of her children has written it. Even when she announced her pregnancy with her 4th child she did it in the form of "Jeremy, Jemima and Julius would like to announce that they are going to have a baby brother or sister"

HopAndSkip · 29/12/2012 13:32

I find it amusing Blush

Sparklingbrook · 29/12/2012 13:35

Babies on FB well that is wrong and just weird, i will agree with that. And I wouldn't like to get a Christmas card with a photo on the front either. The Royal Family do it don't they? Very 'oooh look at us' especially if it's a picture on the beach taken in August. Hmm

insancerre · 29/12/2012 13:38

YANBU
I worked in a nursery where all the children's diaries were written in the first person
e.g "I have had such a super day at nursery today. I got very messy playing in the shaving foam- it was lots of fun"
It just seemed wrong to me- I always wrote in the third person- it's less twee and more factual

1605 · 29/12/2012 13:38

One of our Christmas cards features two siblings in the bath. One is much bigger than the other and (I shit you not) it looks as if she's given birth to the smaller one in a birthing pool. So many kinds of wrong DH wanted to throw it away Shock.

The only thing that used to REALLY have me running for the sick bucket was answering machines that had recorded messages from all the family chirruping together.

catgirl1976geesealaying · 29/12/2012 13:40

They do that at DS's nursery insancerre...............

And you live near me....................hmmmmmmmmmmm :)

pickledparsnip · 29/12/2012 13:40

Oh God I do that. I cringe whilst doing it, but continue all the same. My sisters take the piss out of me. I can't help myself!

1605 · 29/12/2012 13:40

Insancerre yes, that's it. It's the sheer twee-ness of it all that's making my fillings jangle.

Findingmyself · 29/12/2012 13:40

1605 I have just laughed very very loudly at your post! Perhaps the senders wanted to stealthily boast about having an enormous bath?

FunnysInLaJardin · 29/12/2012 13:41

ah it's quite sweet. My friends 6 week old baby has just written to thank us for the gift we gave them at her birth. At first I was a bit Hmm then DH reminded me that we used to do it!
