I looooved Buffy as a teenager. Tuesday nights, 6.45 on BBC2, yes? Is it worth a revisit?

I looooved Buffy as a teenager. Tuesday nights, 6.45 on BBC2, yes? Is it worth a revisit?

I am so old.

You have only seen the heavily edited sanitised version. Get thee a box set now.

Good lines

When Rily comes back and he and Buffy are exchanging war stories

Buffy: Did you die?
Riley: No
Buffy: I'm gonna win.

Spikes little rant when he finds out he can hit other demons, the whole of which I cannot remmebr but ends with ............for Christmas and Puppies, come on'.

And the musical one

I have a theory, it must be bunnies
There not cute like everyone supposes
etc etc

And from episode 1 of Angel

Cordelia 'You're a vampie'
Vampire 'Am not'
Cordelia 'Wre too, I'm from Sunnydale, we have out own hell mouth'

MardyArsedMidlander · 28/12/2012 07:07

I think 'Spike. In his coat' would be a great MN pass word Xmas Grin.

No spoilers- but even at my advanced age, watching 'The Body' was very cathartic and helpful for me, as I went through the same experience at the same age. Only accurate depiction I have ever seen of the strangeness and dislocation.

talkingnonsense · 28/12/2012 07:29

Tee, how dd buffy lead you to the uk? Tell us now!

Spero · 28/12/2012 09:06

I found the season 8 comics quite hard to follow as all the characters look very similar andi cant work out who is who. And the story line is extremely fantastical, which I think is a shame as the best bit of Buffy for me was how it was so grounded in reality - she had to fight deamons and go to school, try to get a job etc.

TwllBach · 28/12/2012 09:19

Oh this is just th thread for me Grin I used to turn down invitations to stay in and watch Buffy as a teenager. I honestly think without it I wouldn't be the person I am today - I get very invested in thins and the writing was just so amazing.

I have all the box sets and have another nine days off so I might start from the beginning! I definitely think it is a transcendy-generation thing, as I get something new and different from it every time I watch.

fedupofnamechanging · 28/12/2012 09:25

'I Will Remember You' is the best Angel/Buffy ever. I cried bucket loads at that one.

Buffy is better than Angel imo, but the last ever episode of angel was an absolute corker.

Am Envy at people getting to watch this for the first time - you have all the gorgeousness of Angel and Spike to discover. Enjoy!

RainbowRabbit33 · 28/12/2012 10:06

Yeay! A Buffy thread!

I have just informed my husband that "Mumsnet says" we have to start watching them, again, from the very first season. His response was to ask if I started the thread...

That'll teach him to fail to buy Sons of Anarchy Season 4!

(Ooohh... Spike and Jax Teller in one forum post, I never saw that one coming! Can I go all 50 Shades and produce some very filthy fan fic at that point?!)

margarethamilton · 28/12/2012 11:04

Never fancied Spike. Angel all the way Wink.

DD is called Anya because of Buffy. I loved her:

"I like you. You're funny, and you're nicely shaped" is my favourite Anya and Xander quite.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/12/2012 11:09

I've been watching Buffy for years :o there's the paranormal side which was great and if course the hot guy side!!! It has everything :)

ViperInTheManger · 28/12/2012 11:14

I loved Buffy. Being the old gimmer of the thread, I was already all growed up and DCs were at school so we watched it at teatime on BBC2 (was it BBC2?) It is ace.

HumphreyCobbler · 28/12/2012 11:21

Anya was my favourite character too.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 28/12/2012 12:42

I love the scene in Angel when Spike is watching Angel with a woman he'd just rescued and Spike is making up the conversation. That was genius!
And Hush where Giles does the drawings of The Gentleman and Buffy unwittingly does a rude gesture. And the line in series 1 where Giles comments that Buffy would wear cats strapped to her feet is she thought they were fashionable.
The Body made me cry as well!

OhDearNigel · 28/12/2012 13:01

So who wants to give their top 10 eppies ? Gosh, I love a Buffy thread :) My work colleague is on honeymoon so I have nobody to bore with my whedon-chat !!

Here's mine, in no particular order

  1. School Hard (s2) - the first appearance of Spike and Dru
  2. Band Candy (s3) - for the sight of Ripper nicking the coat for Joyce. Brilliant
  3. Superstar (s4) - just really love it. Great to see Danny Strong playing the hero
  4. Hush (s4) - Just brilliant. The use of silence is brilliant, the cast really show their actings skills. I don't know why OMWF is always described as the standout episode, for me it's Hush.
  5. The Body (s5) - one of the best episodes of any TV series, ever. The way it deals with the aftermath of death is incredibly powerful. Only niggle for me is that the vamp in the mortuary is totally unnecessary. I've seen it loads of times but it still makes me cry with it's stark reality.
  6. Crush (s5) Poor Spike - this is the one where he confesses his love for Buffy, tries to stake Harmony and Dru returns on a train What the bleeding hell is wrong with you bloody women? What the hell does it take? Why do you bitches torture me?
  7. Hells Bells (s6) Cos I like the big emotional stuff - the one where Xander leaves Anya at the alter.
  8. Normal Again (s6) The idea of making the whole of the Buffyverse a fantasy in a mentally ill Buffy's head was brilliant and a neat reflection on the whole "trying to kill your friends" that comes later in the series
  9. Him (7) for this interchange in the Bronze:

Xander (about the girl dancing with R.J.): Daddy like!
Buffy: What is that shirt made of ? paint?
(Willow's eyes go wide as she realizes...
Willow: Buff?
Buffy: I?m glad Dawnie isn?t here to see her precious boyfriend getting all thrusty with some slut-bag hussy? (The hussy turns around - it's Dawn. Buffy goes slackjawed.) Oh.
Xander: Oh! Oh, no! Daddy no? I wasn?t? when I was looking, I wasn?t? oh, god!
Willow: Right there with ya!

  1. Doppelgangland (s3) because I love Vamp Willow :)

An honourable mention should also go to Conversations with Dead People which I find really, really scary.

TwoCatsAndABabyBump · 28/12/2012 13:23

I love love love Buffy. My cat is named after Willow. Its THE best television programme ever.

I love Buffy and Spike together (or just Spike on his own). I go on mat leave in March. May have to rewatch my boxset for the millionth time.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/12/2012 13:25

I used to work in a vets :) every cat brought in was called Buffy willow or angel :o

FrankelcenseAndMyhrr · 28/12/2012 13:28

Normal Again was a genius episode, as were Hush and The Body.

Other favourites would be:

The Pack (S1) the first episode I ever saw and even now whenever I see "Principal Flutie" in other shows I have to bring the episode up Grin

Becoming Pt 1 & Pt 2 for obvious reasons

Passion (S2) just for ASH's acting during the scene where he discovers Jenny Sad

Doppelgangland (S3) purely for Evil Willow

Something Blue (S4), just because its bloody funny

Superstar (S4) - Jonathan Grin

Fool for Love (S5) - for the Spike backstory

An honourable mention to The Trio as most inept bad guys ever: "It eats you, starting with your bottom." Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 28/12/2012 13:34

Conversations with Dead People is brilliant, I agree

I love OMWF due to the brilliant way Whedon brings all the story arcs together so neatly and the fact that the music is SO well crafted. Impressive work.

Tabula Rasa is a fantastic follow up as well.

OhDearNigel · 28/12/2012 13:42

Don't get me wrong, I do love OMWF. It's just not one of my favourites. Although I do love Anya's bunnies, bunnies it must be BUNNIES!!!!!

To be honest apart from a couple of early episodes I don't think there are any bad episodes. I do dislike the potentials in series 7 though. Particularly Kennedy

InNeedOfBrandy · 28/12/2012 13:57

I'm really happy there's so many people that love buffy still, I thought this thread would die as soon as I posted.

Sabriel · 28/12/2012 13:58

A timely thread. I've just started watching my boxsets again from the beginning.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip we have a Buffy cat Grin

Some of my favourite episodes have already been mentioned, but mine are

Hush
Restless
Something Blue
Once More With Feeling
Band Candy
The Yoko Factor

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 28/12/2012 14:08

I like the one where Buffy gets psychic and finds out her mum did Giles :o
