To medicate via chocolate milk?

Poor little DS (2.5) ended up at my mum and dad's GP on Christmas Eve and has been given amoxicillin for a chest infection. He's trying ever so hard to be perky but his cough is awful and he has a mild temperature. (Lovely GP is also contacting mine to corroborate our concerns that he may be asthmatic, it's prevalent in the family but we have been fobbed off thus far). So, quite important we clear this crackly chest.

However, he WILL NOT take the medicine. He WILL NOT take his liquid paracetamol. He WILL NOT be bribed, cajoled or convinced. We tried forcing it into him, he spat it out down my cleavage. He is a stubborn beast of a thing.

I have, however, discovered that if I mix it with chocolate milk, he will drink it all within a fairly short timespan. I know it's not ideal but these little choc milk/amoxicillin/parapaed cocktails seem my only option to get his meds into him. WIBU to just feed them to him till he finishes the course?

Don't get why your asking - just do it! Or try syringe

MammaTJ · 27/12/2012 14:59

OpheliasWeepingWillow · 27/12/2012 14:59

Yes of course! Is fine - do it Grin

Ha, it was the syringe that preceded the projectile spitting! I thought I was being so clever...

Just do it! A little bit of chocolate milk won't do any harm

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 27/12/2012 15:03

Why would you even ask? By any means necessary.

ZebraInHiding · 27/12/2012 15:06

Yep, it it works, then do it.

ShhhhhGoBackToSleep · 27/12/2012 15:14

Hmmm, if you can make sure he drinks it all within 10 min or so then I would do it. Any longer and I wouldn't in case you are then running two doses together.

But honestly, I would just syringe it in, you hold them like a cradle hold, clamp their arms with your body and your cradling arm, then syringe it in at the back, keep the syringe there until they swallow. Takes seconds.

Our DS was ill with a chest infection and DHs pharmacist aunt mentioned that that particular medicine could be mixed with milk products, but not all of them can. Can you get to a harmacy to check?

Sirzy · 27/12/2012 15:18

I agree with Shhh.

You also need to make sure he takes every drop of the milk its mixed in otherwise he won't be getting a full dose

WorraLorraTurkey · 27/12/2012 15:21

Milk is thick and certainly won't help with the phlegm

But if that's the only way you can get it down him then that's what you'll have to do.

FanjoTimeMammariesAndWine · 27/12/2012 15:21

Do it, I give my DD chocolate milk even without any meds in Grin But yes, make sure he drinks it all
