To stop drinking diet coke - sweeteners

Alwaysasking · 27/12/2012 12:25

Or am I totally over-reacting? I have anxious dispositions so not sure if this is justified but I drink about 3-4 diet cokes a week, I love the stuff but am worried about the sweeteners and their link to cancer. AIBU?

It's no exaggeration to say I used to be addicted to Diet Pepsi but I also drank normal Pepsi if I couldn't get hold of the diet kind. I'd drink about 3-4 cans per day - it had to be cans because there was nothing like cracking open an ice cold can straight from the fridge Xmas Grin. When I say addicted, I'd get jittery if there was less than three cans in the fridge and I've been known the have a panic if I was running low, scoot to the cashpoint and get money out of the bank just with the sole purpose of buying pepsi, then go straight to Iceland to stock up (cans were usually on offer there). I'd spend between £5-15 per week on the evil stuff.

Over time my gums started receding, I got more frequent headaches mainly when I needed a 'fix' Blush and my skin was awful. I gave up completely in July - cold turkey - and haven't touched it since, not even a sip. It was hard at first but now it would be the last drink I'd choose and I much prefer water and tea.

ChocolateCoins · 27/12/2012 14:31

So glad I hate fizzy drinks. Yuck!

YANBU

Theicingontop · 27/12/2012 14:32

It'll wear away your enamel and stain your teeth, though.

Jenny70 · 27/12/2012 14:38

What do you plan to drink instead of the diet coke? If you're replacing it with coke, or any fizzy drinks you're probably about the same health wise - sugar and other additives aren't healthy. Replacing with coffee, caffiene may be an issue... water is about your only safe option, but hardly exciting.

You drink a low-moderate amount - it is not the best thing to drink, but not the worst either. Life has risks, everything, so if you really enjoy it then drink it moderately....

FanjoTimeMammariesAndWine · 27/12/2012 14:47

I personally avoid it because I find it definitely increases my appetite.

RedToothbrush · 27/12/2012 14:57

There is no credible evidence that aspartame causes cancer (or any serious medical problem)

HOWEVER

From a personal point of view, and given the distressing waking vivid nightmares it gives me, I avoid the stuff. Some people are more sensitive to aspartame than others (and I think there is scientific evidence to support this).

Maybe its on a par with intolerances or substances like alcohol or caffeine. I don't know (and I don't drink any caffeine drinks). I just know the amount it affects me is frightening and it does make me fear whether we really know enough about aspartame. I don't loose sight of the fact of just how long it took for the tobacco industry to be pulled up and how long it took to prove health risks and just how much money was at stake.

All I do know, is that its not worth the risk for me as it does affects me. It doesn't bother DH in the slightest and he's fine with it so still drinks it.

Each to their own, but don't be dismissive of the experiences of others on this stuff.

judefawley · 27/12/2012 15:05

I have a bad Pepsi max habit. I drink at least 1 can per day.

I'd like to give it up, not because I believe any of the scaremongering, I just feel guilty for drinking it especially as the dcs aren't allowed fizzy drinks. The 14 year old is possibly thinking me a bit of a hypocrite!

I need to find a nice alternative.

maxmillie · 27/12/2012 15:52

I drink 4-6 cans a day and am happy with that for now - though of course it's not ideal. As others have said, it is my only remaining vice. I don't smoke, take drugs, barely drink anymore, don't drink wine (which in my opinion is evil - gives me the worse headaches), am not pregnat, not breast feeding anymore, finished having children. I don't think that is too bad. And I need the cafeein with 3 young children and a full time job to get through the day.

I know so many women fucked up on their "just one bottle of white wine to relax me in the evening" habits - overweight, disorganised, low level hangover all day, kids in disarray at school without the right stuff because they spent all evening drinking not getting stuff ready for the next day etc etc - at least the evil DC doesn't do that to me!

Some people will of course be intolerant to the aspartame or the caffeine - much like I am intolerant to wine.

It doesn't directly cause cancer though. Or osteoporosis.

Actually in light of this thread I resolve to go back down to 4 cans a day (my absolute bare minimum :) )

chocoluvva · 27/12/2012 16:00

Adieu, your quoted study is 10 years old.
There is no research, as far as I know into the combined effect of consuming more than one 'artificial' additive.
Also no long term linear studies.

LalyRawr · 27/12/2012 16:19

Lol, my manager calls Diet Coke 'Diet Death'.

I am hopelessly addicted to Diet Coke, drink far too much, get headaches and cranky without it, but hey, they are much worse things I could be addicted to.

twinklesparkles · 27/12/2012 17:15

If you're going to give up asparthame you will need to quit more than coke

Its in a LOT of stuff, even non diet drink

And pasta sauce .. :/

Honestly, its pretty much in bloody everything nowadays

[Angry]

Allergictoironing · 27/12/2012 17:22

As twinklesparkles says, loads of things that need checking. Basically ANYTHING that says "diet" or anything sweet (e.g. yoghurts) that say "low fat", all non-diet drinks need checking, basically really anything where there is sugar that they can replace with it whether aimed at dieters or not.

I can tolerate very small amounts usually, but have still been caught out by things you would never imagine would contain it. Same with tomatoes, which I'm also intolerant to Sad.

iwantanafternoonnap · 27/12/2012 17:29

I was at a gathering recently where I took a bottle of diet coke and a few said am I not worried about the affects of aspartame?? I said no as I would have drink so much of the stuff for it to have any effect.

I then mentioned a bit later when talking about sex drives that I don't have one as I am on citalopram and was told that if I stopped drinking aspartame I would not need the citalopram?!?!?!?!

All this was said to me by people smoking and drinking Confused

I work in A and E I see the effects of alcohol and smoking daily never come across an admission to A and E from diet drinks though Grin

eragon · 27/12/2012 17:56

its agreed that artifical colours and additives are not good for adults or children, so much so that they have been removed from kid aimed products. i think the same could be said of aspartame for everyone.

There have been loads of pro and con studies. For every one that mentions lymphomas, leukemia ,brain tumors, etc, or memory lapses there are ones that conclude that its safe.

If you are going to pick one side, its worth trying to work out who paid for this study and who benifits. As one poster said, its in everything, so its cheap, and must be of a good benifit for the food producer to add it to our food. Often thats a money reason, perhaps to keep the food on the shelf for longer or with the right advertising can give a 'health' benifit. That still doenst mean its something we should comsume in large amounts.

someone said that no long term studies, well a few have from middle age onwards but to be long term would mean its introduction from the 70's onward would still not be completed yet.

it might be worth considering /questioning who gave the approval for aspartamene to be added to our food?, and which studies did they look at ? the independant studies or the ones paid by food companies who have a vested interest in aspartame?

an artifical food introduced in to the human food chain is worthy of greater investigation than any other natural foods stuff, so how did it get in to our food when there are so many conflicting studies?

ihatethecold · 27/12/2012 18:54

I have sweetener in my hot drinks as I can't stand sugar in tea/coffee but I don't use aspartame, are the other types of sweeteners just as bad?

HazeltheMcWitch · 27/12/2012 19:09

I drink Diet Coke. 1 can per day, regular as clockwork. I possibly AM addicted, to the caffeine, but I also loo forward to the ritual of it - cracking open a can of ice cod drink, etc etc. I'll remain unbothered by the scare stories about aspartame, until I see something that is credible.

One thing to point out is that sweeteners are also used in non-diet foods ad drinks, and increasingly so. A) as food and drink manufacturers are under growing pressure from govt et al to make foods 'healthier' by cutting down on sugars content. B) as glucose has been becoming much more expensive over past few years, whereas sweetener cost remains stable. To avoid costs and shelf prices rising even more, some companies are switching some sugars to sweeteners.

chris481 · 27/12/2012 19:33

I disagree with whoever said coke zero is just diet coke marketed at men, the flavour is very different. Coke zero has to be very cold otherwise it tastes horrible.

SquinkiesRule · 27/12/2012 19:43

I gave up all pop and drinks with Aspartame and High fructose corn syrup and then carried on my normal exercise routine and have since lost 14lbs. My migraines also became less frequent.
But it's Christmas and all the crap has crept back in the house and I've had a ton of migraines, so I need to clean out the kitchen and get back to normal.

adeucalione · 27/12/2012 21:29

Chocoluvva - the ESFA link in my first post draws on a lot of research, up to 2012.

adeucalione · 27/12/2012 21:40

In fact, the overwhelming majority of studies, dating back to 1985 (including reviews of all available evidence)demonstrate that there is no link between aspartame and cancer, diabetes, MS or any of the other accusations. Some of the negative impacts, such as to rats, do not translate to humans. So while it might be possible to cherry pick the odd negative study, the information from hundreds of studies is that it is safe.

AllOverIt · 27/12/2012 21:55

I gave up aspartame about 6 months ago. I'd already given up caffeine. My anxiety and insomnia got much better.

Be prepared to start reading lots of labels it's in bloody everything.

Alwaysasking · 27/12/2012 23:19

Wow just had a chance to read through replies and am even more confused now! Such conflicting evidence, diet coke doesn't seem to effect me at all, my anxiety isn't worsened by it, no headaches etc but just concerned about potential long term effects. The thing is I hate tea and coffee, I only drink water/squash/diet coke/hot chocolate. But I love my diet coke lol, chuck in a slice of lemon and some ice and I'm happy. But every time I drink it I have that niggling doubt (my anxiety is mainly health related). An ex's dad was a chemist and he wouldn't touch it, people also talk about the 'coin test' where you put a coin in a glass of coke/diet coke (can't remember which) and it goes shiny? Gahh I really don't know.

OP posts:
adeucalione · 28/12/2012 08:26

Yes Diet Coke will clean the oxides from a coin because it is acidic - I think it is 0.05% phosphoric acid, with a ph of about 3 (lemon juice is 2, orange juice is 4). However, 'normal' coke is more acidic, and contains sugar too, so is more harmful to your teeth.

If you do not experience any side effects, and enjoy it, and drink it in moderation, then I don't think you have anything to worry about.

eragon · 28/12/2012 12:58

a doc ralph walton reviewed some of these studies in 1996, and concluded that the studies funded by the USA aspartame industry found that aspartame was safe. his analysis of 90 non industry studies 82 of them identified 1 or more problems.

i will pop back and list some of these studies later...

Snowkey · 28/12/2012 13:11

If research sponsored by Aspartame investors uncovered negative side effects I believe they are not obligated by law to publish them.
