Or is half of Love Actually the most smug and self satisfied film ever?

Just watching it again now......I mean it's 50% shite yet I feel compelled to watch.

All the rich Chelsea types
The impossible romance between the aide and the PM
That kid falling in love and re-enacting the scene from the Titanic
The smug surprise rendition of "all you need is love" at the wedding.

It's all so impossibly smug.....AND it has Keira Knightley doing her usual jaw jutting stuff. It DOES have some nice stuff in there which is why I watch but half the stories make me want to put my foot through then screen.

If it wasn't for the Emma Thompson, Colin Firth and the American woman story it would be unredeemable.

The rest are smug smug smug

Yep am being unreasonable but don't care.

...and am being extra unreasonable for getting the word "smug" into a post that many times.

But this is Richard Curtis's signature sensation - basking in an ocean of smug smuggery. He is the Emeritus Professor of Smugness at the University of Smug.

yanbu

HollaAtMeSanta · 27/12/2012 11:00

YABU.

ALL of Love Actually is the most smug and self satisfied film ever.

slartybartfast · 27/12/2012 11:01

ridiculous story of hugh grant and martine mccucheon
and the kids, yuck
i agree emma thompson brill as is colin firth.

if you are in love yourself, first throes of romanace say, you would probably love the film, or a teenager.
but other than that. i totaly agree, 50% good, 50% terrible. smug

Absy · 27/12/2012 11:02

YABU. ALL of Love Actually is puke worthy. All of it. Apart from possibly the bit where the dude confesses his love via posters. Possibly.

LarkinSky · 27/12/2012 11:02

Yes but why does it bring a little tear to my eye everytime I watch it?

Is it that I'm just emotionally shallow? Or find smugness quite moving?

FriendlyLadybird · 27/12/2012 11:05

It is 100% dreadful. I watched it once: two hours of my life I will NEVER get back.

itsmineitsmine · 27/12/2012 11:07

I agree.

But I love the Colin Firth/Aurelia storyline even though it is daft and probably slightly misogynistic.

And Emma Thompson crying over Joni Mitchell then plastering on a smile for the nativity always make me feel a bit weepy.

spottyock · 27/12/2012 11:07

I love Love Actually, actually. Although Kiera Knightley can do one.

judefawley · 27/12/2012 11:08

I take my hat off to anyone that saw it through to to the end.

We watched about half and then had to give up, totally nauseated.

I think it may be the worst film I have ever (half) seen.

autumnlights12 · 27/12/2012 11:10

the dude confessing his love via posters is the worst part. Emma Thompson is the only good thing in that film.

KatyPeril · 27/12/2012 11:11

I agree with above posters. ALL of it is smug.

Binfullofgibletsonthe26th · 27/12/2012 11:11

I like watching the bits of London all lit up at Christmas. Having lived and worked in Chelsea it's not too far off the mark in some respects.

Also like Tim from the Office, and Stacey from Gavin and Stacey, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson.

Keira Knightly does my blardy swede in though, lip biting mandible flexing over acting plummyness.

jingleallthespringy · 27/12/2012 11:14

I truly do loathe this film. Glad to hear I'm not the only one.

slartybartfast · 27/12/2012 11:14

oh yes i like tim Smile

handsandknees · 27/12/2012 11:17

I watch it every Christmas Blush.

It dawned on me this year that Egg from This Life confessing his love for Keira is actually rather twisted. She's married - get over it!!

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 27/12/2012 11:20

I also think the confessing his love via posters is the worst bit.

What a shitty "best friend". Just get over yourself mate, there are loads of other women out there not married to your best friend.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 27/12/2012 11:20
Grin

Great minds hands!

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/12/2012 11:23

YABU -I love it. But then I was about 15 when it first came out so might have a slightly juvenile enjoyment Grin

juneybean · 27/12/2012 11:23

I love it

DrunkenDaisy · 27/12/2012 11:27

It's all pukesome. That guy with the posters and video is practically a stalker. Although it makes me laugh when Keira says 'Bingo' like the queen at Mecca.

Cutiecat · 27/12/2012 11:29

I like the Colin firth story and the Lara Linley story but this film breaks my heart for Emma Thompson's character. I wonder if I am totally in denial that this is my life. the PM story is stupid and the children who are in love nausiating.

Keira knightly needs a slap with a wet fish for doing that with her jaw the whole time.

Anniegetyourgun · 27/12/2012 11:29

Would it be terribly unreasonable to, you know, not watch it, if it annoys you? Or is it just one of those things you have to watch because it's on, even if you feel compelled to bounce shelled peanuts off the telly all through it?

JakeBullet · 27/12/2012 11:30

"Oh Bingo"....get over herself luv.

Actually I do like Bill Nighy in it as the drugged old rock star
