And lots and lots of other films an' all, mostly about Iraq/Afghanistan

What is it with turning hideousness into entertainment? Angry

YANBU. We can see how horrific it was from the real footage. We don't need a Hollywood film. Very bad taste.

HollyBerryBush · 26/12/2012 23:44

Most events in history have been turned into a drama or film.

You could apply that to Zulu, Krakatoa East of Java, Schindlers List, thousands of films about Vietnam, Korea, Burma.

AgentZigzagHasABigYuleLog · 26/12/2012 23:45

I didn't see the tsunami film, but huge things take a lot of working out as to how to deal with them.

People like to think about stuff from different angles, trying to make sense of an unpredictable world.

It's not voyeurism to try to understand things that are difficult to get your head round, and the media can be a credible source for that.

The world wars are a good example.

trapclap · 26/12/2012 23:52

No, I haven't seen the film either zigzag. It may all sit a little better then, if it is for therapeutical/historical purposes if proceeds went to....xxx...help the survivors in some way. It's mostly rubber necking huh?

What strikes me about this film is how all the characters appear to be white, western, affluent tourists. Not a particularly representative sample of all those who lost their lives and their homes in that awful tragedy, I'd have thought..
Of course it was horrific for everyone caught up in it, but it seems like such a thoughtless cliche to focus solely on the plight of tourists.

whistlestopcafe · 26/12/2012 23:57

I think it is too soon. It is still very raw for a lot of people.

FestiveElement · 26/12/2012 23:58

I think it's too soon as well. Very distasteful. But as long as they make money out if it, what do they care?

trapclap · 27/12/2012 00:00

Yy wombat...always always from a eurocenteic POV

MissKeithLemon · 27/12/2012 00:01

Too soon for a film about it imo. Also the timing of the release is just wrong, at the anniversary point iyswim Sad

trapclap · 27/12/2012 00:02

Yes, too soon Sad

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/12/2012 00:03

Is it not based on a "true story" in the way so many Hollywood films are as in a family were there and survived it,here's loads of embellishment and no analysis of what really happened?

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/12/2012 00:04

Keith...I thought that as well. Bad taste in a big way.

MissKeithLemon · 27/12/2012 00:07

I'm sure it has been perfectly 'well timed' to coincide Hmm

Goldensunnydays81 · 27/12/2012 00:08

It is def too soon, I was in Sri Lanka when it happened living with my Sri Lankan husband our village was hit and lots of people we knew lost their lives was awful I still think about it a lot now and I hate being in crowded places. I still can't believe it was 8 years ago it feels like it was only last year. I have seen the first part of the advert got it and have to turn it over as it freaks me out too much Hmm

AmberLeaf · 27/12/2012 00:12

I saw the trailer at the cinema.

I was Shock at it, too soon and just insensitive IMO.

firemansamisnormansdad · 27/12/2012 00:16

It's too soon and in very very bad taste. 20,000 people died or was it more?

iwillsleepagainsomeday · 27/12/2012 00:17

i heard in an interview that it is a spanish film actually. And based on the real story of a Spanish family.

this aside... I agree with all the others. Too soon and I will definitely not go to see it.

undertheduvet · 27/12/2012 00:21

250,000 died all across Indian ocean. not sure if its the best topic for a film tbh

MissKeithLemon · 27/12/2012 00:28

More people died (quarter of a millionish in total iirc) and many thousands more had their lives/livelihoods smashed to pieces quite literally.

Its probably the single biggest natural disaster in our lifetimes.

It was only 8 years ago and whole swathes of coastal areas in se asia have not even come close to recovery.

This film is tasteless in the extreme.

ArkadyRose · 27/12/2012 00:37

It's not a Spanish film, but it is based on a book written by a Spanish woman who survived the tsunami with her family. I guess merely surviving when so many hundreds of thousands didn't wasn't enough for her and she decided to make some cash and a bit of celebrity out of it as well.

I wasn't there, it didn't affect anyone I know or love, but when that trailer came on in the cinema my whole being just froze and I got quite upset.

I won't be seeing it and neither will my DD who keeps asking.

I agree its too soon.

aroomofherown · 27/12/2012 09:05

I agree. My first thought when I saw the trailer was that they are making money out of someone else's tragedy. And ignoring the majority of people who were affected by making it a "white person on holiday"'s story.

Ugh. Tacky.

SilentMammoth · 27/12/2012 09:15

Far too soon.

And in really, really poor taste.

I remember seeing news footage and being absolutely appalled. Now, I wasn't there, lost no relatives and have no connection to the area connected. But I saw the tv trailer and it immediately brought all the news foitage back.

They should have more respect.
