Watching toy story 3 and there's a graduation photo of andy, his mum and sister.

Thinking about it I've only just notices that it is a single parent family.

Portrays single mums in a good light.

Why assume woody would have belonged to a Dad rather than a mum?

Kirk1 · 26/12/2012 17:07

Woody's from the 1950s, how could he have been Andy's first? I got the impression that he's been handed down from parent to child. Maybe Woody was Mom's doll!

WildWorld2004 · 26/12/2012 17:09

Maybe dad took the graduation photo thats why he isnt in it. Maybe dad is in the military and that is why you dont see him & why they are moving.

Tee2072 · 26/12/2012 17:12

He's never had a visible Dad. I always assumed he died just after Molly was born, but they never say.

Toy Story 3 is a work of genius. I hadn't noticed that it was a single parent family. Now I like it more.

yggdrasil · 26/12/2012 17:14

I noticed this in the first Toy Story. It is great. Never an issue. The graduation photo does make it very clear.

Not a Disney film but the Lorax also has both a protagonist (Ted) and antagonist (the Onceler) from single mother families. I really liked the way that BOTH of them were from families headed by a single mother, because it meant that no way could the Onceler's evil whatevers be attributed to his coming from a single parent household.

yggdrasil · 26/12/2012 17:17

by the way, why are people so keen to interpret this as his dad possibly dying?

tbh if his dad had died I'd expect a reference to it really, a photo of him or suchlike. The fact he is totally not in the kid's life suggests to me that he's left the family.

Statistically too, I'm pretty sure that most families headed by a single woman are that way because of divorce/breakup, not death.

I saw that Kim. That's the one where Jessy sings that sad song and is dusty under the bed.

whatalwayshappenlife · 26/12/2012 17:23

Because Fellatio.

He's not seen when they are moving house, or in the Christmas scene at the end, or when they go to pizza planet.
The graduation photo of course the father would have been included.
He's never once been seen or mentioned.

And of course it portrays her as a good mum. She's a very together woman and has raised good kids.

What's your problem??

yes, why are some people so keen to interpret it as his dad dying? Confused It is far more likely that he has moved out.

And why do so many of you say you like it more, because you now think she is a single mum? Confused Is it something to aspire to? It's hardly unusual, is it? It's not like it's a really brave, groundbreaking thing to imply in a movie. Family movies are full of divorce, break-up and single parenthood.

Tee2072 · 26/12/2012 17:25

Here's the answer.

AmberLeaf · 26/12/2012 17:25

Why are people so keen to suggest the dad has died?

Can't she just be divorced/single?

Does it make her nicer if she is widowed?

SantaIAmSoFuckingRock · 26/12/2012 17:27

maybe she used a sperm donor.

AmberLeaf · 26/12/2012 17:27

Yes they are, but in a negative light.

roughtyping · 26/12/2012 17:27

Fellatio, because I imagine some of us are/have been single parents. It's nice to see single mothers portrayed as capable.

FellatioNelson · 26/12/2012 17:28

Yes, she is a very together woman and has raised good kids, but how does that portray single mothers in a good light? If it was obvious that she was married would you say being a good mum portrayed married women in a good light? Confused

AmberLeaf · 26/12/2012 17:29

No Fellatio, because that would be the norm.

Did anyone actually read my link?

The truth? Pixar couldn't afford a dad. So they didn't bother to put one in.

No big secret or special message about single parents or anything else.

Witchety · 26/12/2012 17:35

Maybe mum kicked dad out after she found he was up to no good on adultwork or Facebook?
