About clothes sizes?

For Christmas, DD got a lot of clothes. She's 2yo (birthday in September) not a big 2yo either, not tiny just a bit smaller than average.
Now most of these beautiful clothes have been bought in size 3-4 with one pair of leggings were even a 4-5. The only set of clothes she got that weren't too big was a 2-3 two piece set with size 1.5-2 pants (which I plan on taking back and getting the right size for both).
Is this odd?? I mean, she isn't massive so 4-5 pants aren't going to fit any time soon. Her leg length is smaller than average so even 2-3 is too long.
Im so grateful, but AIBU to be a bit Hmm
Now she's left with loads of clothes that im going to have to wait possibly 1yr+ for her to wear Sad
They're so pretty too...

Oh chill out and either swap the clothes for things she can wear now or put them away for a year.

It's not too odd to get wrong sized clothes for Xmas an people will always try and buy too big rather than too small for kids!

My DD is 2yo and skinny.

I ask people to buy her clothes in a 3-4 if they want to buy clothes as gifts.

I've picked up some 4-5 bits already for her myself.

Far better that she gets a full year of wear out of them than has another growth spurt and only gets a few weeks out of them. MIL bought loads of 1.5-2yo stuff last Christmas, DD shot up and was out of it in a couple of weeks :( She's 3 in March and STILL has 2-3 stuff with tags on as she had so much last year.

foreverondiet · 26/12/2012 12:10

I would buy bigger as a gift I would assume she already had enough for this season by December, so don't be Hmm.

I find it most frustrating that I am obviously a size 8 yet frequently find a 20 a bit snug. I blame Cameron and his government of monkeys.

Findingmyself · 26/12/2012 12:19

I have a similar thing in my family but in my case family members ask me which sizes my DCs wear, then look at things in shops and decide it will be "far too big for them" and buy what size they choose, which is then inevitably too small.

Very frustrating. DD2 wears age 9-10 but family members keep getting her leggings in age 6-7 (she is 8)

Makes much more sense to buy clothes a size to big than risk them not fitting or not fitting for long.

DS is 3 and still in 18-24 clothes. Presents he has been given are mainly 3-4 so will be put away for when they fit.

I ordered him some 2-3 and 3-4 clothes online to for next winter or whenever they fit!

happyinherts · 26/12/2012 12:25

So you're not actually being unreasonable about the clothes sizes - more about people giving gifts that need to be put away for a while?

HollaAtMeSanta · 26/12/2012 12:38

YABU and ungrateful. Most shops will swap tags-on clothes without a receipt if it's just a size change.

PrincessOfChina · 26/12/2012 12:40

If I were buying "winter" clothes for a child I would probably buy them in next year's size as I would assume you we're kitted out for this year.

The exception would be for someone close, eg. My Mum has bought DD clothes but know what she still needs in current size.

EverythingsDozy · 26/12/2012 12:45

Ok, I'll accept im being unreasonable, as I've just had a look through the clothes my 7wo got for Christmas and all of his are 3-6m, so what's the difference really??
I won't accept, however, that im being ungrateful. We are very grateful for whatever our children get for Christmas.

I think it was more the 4-5 pants i was a buy Hmm about. Think I am just a bit miffed that she has all of these beautiful new clothes and i can't put her in any of them Sad

Taggie, I have that problem too! Xmas Grin

Sirzy · 26/12/2012 13:01

Well 3-6 month clothes are a size up on what would be expected for a 7 week old so it's the same really!

ChristmasNamechangeBridezilla · 26/12/2012 13:21

My boys are both big for their age so I had to let everyone know what they could do with and in what sizes when they asked about Christmas presents. I think the whole family ignored me Grin.

The 1.5 year old has received a lot of lovely warm jumpers in bigger sizes which probably won't fit him until the summer when he won't need them and might well be too small by next winter at the rate he is going.

I'm also going to have to go out and buy some more jumpers for my three year old after my mother told me not to as she had some put away for Christmas. They are aged 5! He is big but not that big!

Nevertheless, all lovely, I just hope they can wear them! Saying that, the three year old is currently in an age 3 shirt bought for the one year old which just fits him so it's not all bad!

shrimponastick · 26/12/2012 13:27

I would rather receive items that are too big. DS and DSSs are all big for their ages.

People are being considerate, and they growth spurts can occur at any time.

lljkk · 26/12/2012 13:54

DD was like this, sometimes we had to wait 2-4 years!
She's up to 25th percentile in height now.
