AIBU to be completely mortified and embarrassed about receiving a really expensive present from a family member with whom we have always had an agreement to buy or the children and a small pressie for the adults?
This year the kids get usual gifts and we get the small, normal foodie gift and the I also get a dress!!!! Nice, but really embarrassing since our gift to them was really small.

I would just say a very heartfelt thank you. Did they say why you got the dress? Maybe they saw it in a sale and thought it was exactly what you would like and bought it on a whim. I wouldn't be embarrassed - maybe a nice thank you note with some flowers/chocolates /wine or whatever?

Don't be embaressed.
They may have done it on impulse or wanted to treat you.

I can understand it but to be honest the dea that everyone has to run a mental tally on how much we have spent on each other is depressing. Can't people occasionally treat each other? What happened to the joy of an unexpected gift?

I think it depends who it's from. If its from your mum or brother/sister then they just want you to have the dress and i wouldnt give it another thought. If its from someone who has some money to spend, then it's less of a big deal to them. The person obviously wants you to have the dress so enjoy it.

What savoy said :)

What dress is it? If its the 99p dress that's been around this year then not so big a deal as a £100 dress from a posh shop

Drywhiteplease · 26/12/2012 13:13

Think it was about £60... Thanks for you advice. Thank you and flowers will do nicely.
