...and if I do, what will happen to me?

Throat is killing me probably an infection as all crusty looking and cant swallow, talk or sleep.

Am on strepsil number 5 and still not numb. How many is too many?

I've eaten whole packets before

Depending on the flavour and ingredients, they might give your diarrhoea.

EuphemiaInExcelsis · 25/12/2012 22:52

Noooo! Runny bummy!

DingDongBelle · 25/12/2012 22:54

Oh really? Bugger. Have started number 6...

Why won't my throat numb?! How many before my insides are anaesthetised?!

DingDongBelle · 25/12/2012 22:54

Not sure the flavour. It's dark. Possibly... Strawberry?

I always find these things make my throat worse. DH gorges on them and inevitably gets the shits. Never learns.

missrlr · 25/12/2012 22:56

Strepsils are rubbish, get decquacaine next time

DingDongBelle · 25/12/2012 23:02

Ooh, what's that?

These were given to me by MiL. On number 7. Throat still sore but my tungb ib nub.

Do throat sweets actually work ?

DingDongBelle · 25/12/2012 23:20

Well. I have had 8 and am still in pain, so I scientifically declare that no they do not. These are supposed to have local anaesthetic in them (according to MiL) but have only numbed my tongue and made my teeth a bit itchy.

Im off to do a saltwater gargle now Dh is home. Boo to nasty Christmas throat infection. I must have been on the naughty list this year :(

I work with medicines...Strepsils are not pain killers. The activeingredients are only antiseptic, that means substances that might kill bacteria.
If u want to get rid of pain, get paracetamol.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 25/12/2012 23:58

Oh god, the ones with anaesthetic in are the worst. They never work.

Honey and lemon ones or vitamin C ones work most of the time, but you can usually tell if they will make a difference after the first two.

Listerine might help? I hope you feel better soon!

CatchingMockingbirds · 26/12/2012 00:00

You'll probably get the runs.

blueemerald · 26/12/2012 00:03

These are the only throat sweets I've found that are worth bothering with.

breatheslowly · 26/12/2012 00:05

Are they sugar free? That will give you the runs. Decquacaine throat spray is good.

PigletJohn · 26/12/2012 00:10

I find a large glass of nott-ver-cold water with soluble paracetamol works, when you take occasional sips and it flows over the throat as you swallow, so you get twice the benefit.

You will probably not need to reach the limit of two tabs four times a day, or whatever it is.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 26/12/2012 00:12

Sounds like you have tonsilitis and not just a sore throat. Strepsils will do fuck all!

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 26/12/2012 09:18

I use tyrozets they're the only thing that works for my throat.

DingDongBelle · 26/12/2012 09:41

Thanks all. Fell asleep last night.

Pleased to report: no runs. However have woken up with no voice at all. Not a peep. DH thinks its his Christmas present Wink. An attempting to communicate with my 20mo Ds via mime Confused

Have discarded the Streps in favour of saltwater gargling and hot water with honey and lemon. It's soothing and now I've lost my voice the pain is much better. Wouldn't I have a fever from tonsillitis?

Probably won't kill you, and right now, my 14yo DAd would say YAmostdefinitelyNBU, because she also has a rotten throat infection, she started on AB's on Christmas Eve.

MerryCouthyMows · 26/12/2012 09:51

My GP suggested grating about an inch of ginger into a flask of water, adding lemon and honey, and drinking the whole lot and it would be gone if you drunk the whole flask of it.

DD hasn't yet tried it, but only because I have no ginger.

My GP is very in favour of alternative stuff though - he refers people for stuff like reflexology etc.

The old GP would have laughed at things like that.

Veritate · 26/12/2012 10:42

I've had the vile sore throat bug for over a week now. The most effective painkiller seems to be ibuprofen, but I can't take many as they b**r up my stomach.

MerryCouthyMows · 26/12/2012 11:15

My DD reckons soluble paracetamol works the best, it coats her throat or something - she gargles with it before swallowing it. Tastes rank, but seems to be helping her.
