To expect my husband to keep the children quiet so I can have a lie in?

I know it's Christmas Eve, so they are excited and therefore more noisy than usual, but actually, every time it is my turn to have a bit of a lie in, I can't, because all I can hear is the children shouting and tearing up and down. I admitted defeat ten minutes ago and went to the bathroom. Every light upstairs was on and I could hear every single word the children were bellowing downstairs, but not a peep from my husband, which made me wonder where the chuff he was and what he was doing?

When my husband gets to have a lie in, I try hard to make sure we don't disturb him. So I close the bedroom door, and keep the kids contained downstairs and make them be quiet ie talk without shouting and do calm activities instead of wrestling and jumping on the furniture. It's only for an hour or so. AIBU to want the same for myself and to expect my husband to keep them quiet?

YANBU - get yourself a cuppa, tell hem to keep it down and looking manfully at your husband and then go back to bed. If you can squirrel the big tin of roses past them, I'd take those as well

RandomMess · 24/12/2012 08:01

Nope YANBU but perhaps stop bothering to let him have a lie in?

SantasNaughtySack · 24/12/2012 08:01

YANBU. How old are your children? Would you be able to take yourself off to the bedroom to read/watch Netflix in be for an hour? Not as good as sleep, but still a nice chill out time for you?

I thought I was like you - keeping the dc quiet while dh has his lie in. Until he told me that no, kids shout and ball and have a carry on when I get up with them. Doesn't seem to bother him though.

We were both up this morning and kids have been angelic. Go figure.

DorsetKnobwithJingleBellsOn · 24/12/2012 08:02

Well the simple answer is to let them play normally when it is his turn for a lie in.

MrsMangoGingerbreadhouse · 24/12/2012 08:05

YANBU. Do as CSIJanner suggests. Then latr, calmly make it known to DH that you will be taking it in turns for lie ins, and if he messes your one up, you get the next one, and the one after, until you get a successful lie in, then it's his turn again.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 24/12/2012 08:10

he messes it up

Really?
We have this in our house. Dh sleeps heavier than me. So he the kids don't bother him. You may not be as good at keeping them quiet as you think.

Get some ear plugs.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 24/12/2012 08:11

Or its entirely possible he doesn't realise it disturbs you.

The lights didn't bother you as you didn't notice til you were up.

Tell him

financialwizard · 24/12/2012 08:17

What is a lie in? I don't recall!

WileywithSageStuffing · 24/12/2012 08:19

On a normal day YANBU

To post this on Christmas YABVU! Bah humbug!

Whatiswitnit · 24/12/2012 08:20

Yes, it's possible he doesn't realise it disturbs me. I could get earplugs - hadn't thought of that.

The kids are seven and under so I know there will be some noise, but I don't expect shrieking and shouting so that I can clearly hear every word. I also worry what the neighbours may think if there is a lot of noise before 8am.

I have a cup of tea now and I am enjoying ten more minutes in bed, then I will get dressed and pitch in downstairs.

I am quite tempted to get my revenge when it's husband's turn... Accidentally on purpose drop some saucepans or something.

YANBU - I have this too. Kids are 1 and 3 and it happens every time I have a 'lie in' (she says listening to the racket downstairs after being up until 2.30am doing Christmas related tasks)

Usually I have to keep them entertained for up to an hour while I wait for him to get up to go downstairs with them as it is (before my lie in!) and when he reaches 'can't cope mode'' he opens the stair gate and says 'let's go and see mummy' unleashing the pair of them on me Hmm

I'm 38 weeks pregnant too so REALLY need the sleep!

Christmas Eve or not, if it's your lie in he should make more effort!
