I personally loved the books. When I heard it was being turned into a film I was confused as to how that would be possible, because from text to film it really wouldn't translate well.

Watched it again tonight, and omg it is awful!

Why the hell they set it in NY when it should have been London is ridiculous.

I was hoping for a the devil wears prada fashion style film.

Yanbu! I love the books, but the film was shit! They ruined it completely! Ps I love you was the same :(

Some books are just not meant to be films. I am interested to see how The perks of being a wallflower translates.

ChristmasTreegles · 23/12/2012 23:24

Book was good, film was horrible. Definitely agree.

FeckOffCup · 23/12/2012 23:24

Not a big fan of the film but then I'm not a big fan of the books either, haven't read the whole series but I've just recently finished the latest one and thought the main character was awful. She never learns her lesson, is in denial about her shopping addiction and expects instant gratification with everything and is training her daughter to be exactly like her. I won't be reading any more of them, I was disappointed as I have enjoyed some of the author's other books but don't like the shopaholic ones at all.

Purple2012 · 23/12/2012 23:26

Agree. Love all her books. Did you know she also has written books under the name Madelaine Wickham?

downtherabbithole1 · 23/12/2012 23:27

FeckOffCup the last one did anger me to the point that it was hard to read.

She is an awful character, and she doesn't deserve to always have everything work out for her.

(I am aware it's only fiction Grin )

Yes I did Purple2012 but I've never read them.

Any good?

Yes I knew about the Madeline Wickham books, not sure if I've read any though!

JeezyOrangePips · 23/12/2012 23:28

I haven't read the perks of being a wallflower, but really enjoyed the film.

I have, however, bought the book for my dd for Christmas so I can read it

soontobeyummy · 24/12/2012 00:31

I love and have got all of the series of the Shopaholic books, but have to agree the film is absolute dross.
For starters, it wasn't even in flippin' London! Garbage, and nothing like the books.
Although I have to agree with the previous poster who said that Becky's an annoying character - liked her in the first few books, but there were parts when you just wanted to grab her, shake her then give her a good slap. Grin
Read a few of her books under the name Madeleine Wickham, which have a different tone and are a bit more serious.

ChristmasSpiritEndorphins · 24/12/2012 01:02

I have read and enjoyed all of her books, MW included. The film was a huge disappointment. The wrong country the actors playing the parts were all wrong! I would have chosen someone like the girl in "Clueless" but English, to play the part, and for Luke a young Collin Firth type. Parents roles should have been should have been played by actors more like Bridget Jones parents.

I haven't read a wallflower book though, is there a new book out?

EverythingsDozy · 24/12/2012 07:07

I refused to watch the film because it just didn't ring true to the books for me. The woman they got to play her just seemed so wrong for the part.
I haven't read the last book. I started it but just couldn't get into it like I did the others.

kazfox · 24/12/2012 10:53

I've been putting off buying it in case it was crap. I agree Becky is getting annoying in the books, although I was horrified in the last one when the childcare guru said Minnie's behaviour was normal as had 11 month old DD... Now she's 2 I can imagine her going on a similar rampage if allowed!

halcyondays · 24/12/2012 11:14

Yes, I love the books, but a while ago I started to watch the film and switched off after a few minutes as it was so awful and nothing like the books. They could make a good film out of out, if it was done in a similar way to Bridget Jones, but instead they ruined it.

HollaAtMeSanta · 24/12/2012 11:52

Hated the first book, hated the fetishisation of material things, hated the spoilt stupid "heroine". Doubt the film is any better.

Purple2012 · 24/12/2012 11:56

I do like the Madelaine Wickham books. Slightly different style.

elliejjtiny · 24/12/2012 12:46

I loved the books, especially the wedding one. The film would have been good if I'd never read the books before but it was just too different to the books.
