Or not, ds1 has asked for it as me and dh, normally have it, ds2 can't have it not that he willl know, so he'll be having soda water in a orange glass, to him it will be fizzy pop. Or do I pretend to do Buck's Fizz, fresh orange and lemonade/soda water

I'm thinking the latter, but dh says a little topped up with lemonade won't do any harm?

I don't actually think a tiny drop of alcohol as a one-off would in itself cause long term harm, for example if they took a sip of mine when I wasn't looking I wouldn't be too worried. I just really wouldn't want them getting the idea that it is acceptable, as it is then easier for it not to be a one-off but a more regular occurrence. I would hate to hear a child of mine in later years saying they'd been drinking since they were six.

KitCat26 · 24/12/2012 08:24

I'd say no, but would let the 6yr old have a tiny sip of mine.

My 3 year old is going to have red or white grape juice in a sherry glass so she can pretend to be grown up Grin. I wouldn't give her a glass of alcohol (don't mind a tiny bit of trifle with lots of custar though).

Out of all my friends I was the one who was allowed to drink from a young age. Out of all my friends, I was the one who did not go out and get ridiculously drunk, I was always happy with one or two drinks. I think half the problem with alcohol in this country is that it is 'forbidden', unlike on the continent.

Can we go back a few posts.....j2o glitter drink??? Dd would love that! Where do you get it from?

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 24/12/2012 08:31

I've seen it in Sainsburys this morning Kitten

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2012 08:36

Brilliant!
Bit late for Christmas but we will get some in for New Year. It will really tickle her :)

BlatherskitedaboutChristmas · 24/12/2012 08:36

I got ours from Tesco. It's called Glitterberry and is Cherry flavoured I think. I didn't realise it was glittery until after I bought it but the DC will love it

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2012 08:37

Thanks both :)

MariahScarey · 24/12/2012 08:38

No you moron

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2012 08:39

I guess the thing about giving a little bit of alcohol is that it normalises it for children. I'm very conscious that lots of kids see alcohol as being utterly necessary for an adult social occasion. It's quite nice if, not only do they not have it, but also if they see you turn it down sometimes.

MariahScarey · 24/12/2012 08:39

And FWIW the myth of watered down wind is now VERY out if fashion in alcohol education. No evidence it helps bin fact it shows kids you can break the rules.

New guidance says there should be NO ALCOHOL till they are 18. And France etc has bad rates of alcoholism.

OhyouMerryLittleKitten · 24/12/2012 08:40

Mariah, just read the op only have you? Grin

MariahScarey · 24/12/2012 08:40

no to the watered down wine myth klaxon

It really is a crock of shit.

MariahScarey · 24/12/2012 08:44

Yes. But this phallacy comes up every year

MariahScarey · 24/12/2012 08:45

Lol!!!
fallacy.
I dunno. That. ;)

ProudAS · 24/12/2012 11:13

The legal minimum age for drinking alcohol in privare at home is 5 years.

I used to have a few drops of wine or spirits with my parents from age 6. Never did me any harm and meant I didn't want to go experimenting with booze as a teenager.

backwardpossom · 24/12/2012 11:24

The glittery J20 is on offer in Tesco - £2 for a 4 pack. I'm pregnant, so that's what I'm drinking. It's quite nice Xmas Smile

IneedAsockamnesty · 24/12/2012 11:28

That does not mean that its ok for a child to start downing booze at 5, it only means its not a crime for them to have any.

A sip given to a under 5 is a crime
Rubbing brandy on a under 5's gums is a crime

Plenty of things that are not crimes aren't very sensible.

lurkerspeaks · 24/12/2012 11:34

As everyone else has said - madness to even consider at age 6.

I would make 'adult bucks fizz' and children's bucks fuzz. The latter would be sparkling water/ lemonade and OJ. I would make it 'special' by putting it in naice glasses although they probably wouldn't get a champagne flute.

I wouldn't bang on about the fact it was different to mine either.

When this has happened in the past - adults drinking beer in pub. Children drinking "beer" (OJ and lemonade) they went to school the next day and announced that they had had beer in the pub.... Xmas Blush. There was some interesting explaining to do to the teacher.

lidlqueen · 24/12/2012 11:40

why would you even think about it.? What if a parent came on here and said..ohh I am rolling a fat one for christmas, is it oK for my 3 and 6 year olds to have some? what would you say?
