I've just taken valium and BF. DCs fell asleep instantly. They will be OK won't they?

I was having a panic attack and needed to get family onto the train so took 2mg. I then BF both DCs without thinking - they are 3.1 and 1.8 but both 10kg. They both fell instantly asleep. Should I worry?

no expert, but it should be fine. WHen DS was literally just weeks old I was prescribed strong pain killers by the dentist, he slept through for the first time ever. He was fine.

MrsBW · 23/12/2012 17:45

Doubt there's anything to worry about.

How long after taking the Valium did you BF?

snowballofvanilla · 23/12/2012 17:47

about an hrs after

Ok... Looking at this, I would say (although I'm not a doctor) that if it's a one off that you don't need to be overly concerned.

www.drugs.com/breastfeeding/diazepam.html

If you're worried, call NHS Direct though.

Itchywoolyjumper · 23/12/2012 17:51

2mg is quite a small dose and only a small amount of that would have made it into the wee ones through your milk. However I'm not a doctor or a pharmacist and I don't know what the safety rules are for this drug so I'd say the best thing to do would be to give NHS 24 a call, just to be on the safe side.

Itchywoolyjumper · 23/12/2012 17:53

cross posts with MrsBW, but great minds think alike and you'll never be sorry you were too careful when it comes to your kids and ingesting weird stuff.

delusionsofadequacy · 23/12/2012 17:58

A one off low dose of 2mg is unlikely to have cause any problems. By the time its been diluted by your blood and made it into the milk the dose is likely to be even lower.

It does make its way into the milk though unfortunately so I would just keep an eye on them. It has a fairly long duration of action so they may be sleepy for a while.

If you think you may need something for panic attacks again I would have a chat with your GP. There are several other drugs with similar action that get into the milk less and that your body gets rid of quicker which might be safer while you are feeding.

DD 2 is awake. phew

GreenPetal94 · 23/12/2012 18:15

That's a low dose and it should be fine

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 23/12/2012 18:16

Surely whoever prescribed it mentioned breast feeding.

It should be fine, but no one here is a medical expert.

EauRougelyNight · 23/12/2012 18:22

LactMed page on valium

I had it on a flight recently and both my DDs (3.11yo and 19mo) were fine didn't make them sleep on the bloody plane. With younger babies you need to be very careful.

Breastfeeding Network has a really good helpline about drugs and breastmilk if you are worried.

EauRougelyNight · 23/12/2012 18:24

Bugger, meant to post the BFN link. You can also email. here.

Moominsarescary · 23/12/2012 18:27

Didn't they know you were bf when they prescribed it?

I was given oramorph after my emcs and bf, which they said would be fine

ethelb · 23/12/2012 18:28

if you nip into the nearest pharmacy they will sit down, work it out and help

snowballofvanilla · 23/12/2012 18:30

GP v antiBF so didn't discuss. I usually wait 24hrs before feeding after a dose

OP posts:
Salmotrutta · 23/12/2012 18:32

Your GP is anti BF??

EauRougelyNight · 23/12/2012 18:38

If you take it regularly then I would chat to the BFN and see what they suggest. There might be another similar medication that is more suitable (lorazepam maybe?) and they'll probably have some info that you can take to your GP.

OHforDUCKSchristmasCake · 23/12/2012 18:48

2mg is very weak.
They arent tiny, only a very tiny amount would go through to the milk. I wouldnt worry.

5mg and above I definitely would avoid.

I took 5mg in my first pregnancy to get me through an exam and about 15mg in my last pregnancy before I knew I was pregant and both mine are ok. I reckon pregnancy must be worse than bf, what with it being blood and constant as opposed to one feed.

Sorry to hear you're panicky.

BartletForTeamGB · 23/12/2012 19:00

2mg diazepam is practically a homeopathic dose.

Yes, it isn't ideal when used in large doses regularly with very small babies, but this will all be fine.

"It should be fine, but no one here is a medical expert."

I am! Xmas Smile I wouldn't be worried AT ALL. You don't even need to pump and dump with general anaesthetics.

inkonapin · 23/12/2012 19:14

Find a new gp. You need one who is educated about bf and who you feel comfortable disclosing important facts to, otherwise you risk harming your children. Not in this case, though, I wouldn't think, 2mg is hardly anything so as a one off would be fine. Find a new gp!

snowballofvanilla · 23/12/2012 19:47

Sorry I perhaps should have said GP anti extended and tandem BF. But thanks for reassurance. Trying to get help w anxiety but xmas never good time for needing help w

Maybe give up bfing your children, it'll probably make you feel much better..bfing is hard on a mother physically and mentally .maybe that's what your gp was getting at.
Valium is not a good drug. However, a quick look on the BNF website shows its fine, so I wouldn't worry.

Hmm
CaliforniaSucksSnowballs · 23/12/2012 23:28

If you bf right away when you took the Valium I doubt would have had time to make it's way to the milk that quickly, 2mg is a very small amount, I wouldn't worry and I would look for a new GP who is more supportive.
