to ask her to iron my clothes again

A couple of times a year I get a lady to do my ironing for me, usually after holidays or if something has prevented from me keeping on top of it (a broken leg this time).

She collects and delivers my ironing the same day and it's always well pressed and folded etc.

However, I had my latest lot delivered yesterday, a load were on hangers and covered with a black bag as it was raining which is fine. It was until I took them upstairs and went up later to put them away did I realise they absolutely stink of chip fat/oil. I don't fry food or use anything like that and there were straight out of the tumble drier. I know it's from being stored at her house overnight as the black bags also smell of oil.

I'm really annoyed as I have tried a few bits on today and had to discard them because of the smell.

AIBU to text her and explain and ask her to re-do them? They can't be worn as they are and I don't have time to washing, dry and iron 2 black bags of clothes, which was the whole point of me getting her to iron them for me in the first place.

If it's her house that smells it's unlikely the second attempt would be much better. I'd just make her aware of it and ask for a refund.

WorraLorraTurkey · 22/12/2012 10:40

Is it a proper business or just someone taking in ironing to make ends meet?

If it's the latter, I'd just ask for a refund and use a proper ironing agency.

DragonMamma · 22/12/2012 10:42

Worra, just a woman who lives near my mum. What shall I text her? I don't want to be rude but I'm peed off.

YANBU- but re-ironing won't solve it. If you haven't got time to do it all, just handwash the garment you need and get a kind soul to take it to a service laundrette or some such ( although to be honest, I'm not sure there ARTE any around these days, but nice idea...)

I would explain it to her and not ask her again.

nilbyname · 22/12/2012 10:45

I would call not text, explain the situation, and ask for a refund, not a re-do.

Service wash the lot, and then iron as you need/go for essentials only.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 22/12/2012 10:45

They will need washing not re-ironing.

DragonMamma · 22/12/2012 10:47

Sorry, I meant I would wash and dry again and then ask her to iron them? There's been no issues before but then I've never had to leave them overnight, as was the case this time.

Just explain to her that the clothes were sent to her clean, but have come back smelling of cooking and frying. You can't wear them like and if she can't put it right, then please could have a refund or partial refund- after all she has done the job, but has inadvertently made your clothes smell.

I definitely won't be using her again, I'll go back to my previous woman who doesn't pick up or deliver but I didn't have issues with my clothes smelling.

I'm dreading telling her, I've made everybody sniff them to double check I'm not imagining things.

It might be the black bags that are causing the smell actually.

I had a problem once with a few things I'd sold on ebay - a couple of buyers complained that the clothes smelled of frying. I virtually never fry food at home so couldn't understand it - it turned out that the smell was coming from the plastic liners they's been wrapped in.
