16k savings to make you ineligible - though i think it might have gone up recently. my IL's donate money to us every so often so they don't have too much.

yes does seem odd that my IL's have all sorts of benefits, but if they had income of about £10 more per month would get a lot less. Also seems odd that because my FIL had mobility problems at 60 he gets mobility allowance, but as i understand things if he had them once retired he would get nothing.
