To think sacking someone for drinker idiocy at the Christmas party is a bit harsh?

DH works for a company which put on an annual Christmas shebang with free drinks all night. It's for staff and big clients.

A colleague got drunk and was warned a couple of times to calm down.

He then did the caterpillar and cracked his two front teeth.

Returned to work and was told to pack his desk. He was not a permanent staff member.

Is it me or is this a bit harsh?

Someone at Dh's work threw a chair that hit two other people at the christmas do whilst drunk. He was suspended but not sacked.

Much to my shame and disgust my cousin glassed a colleague in the head at his Christmas party a few years ago. Unbelievably he didn't get sacked and the poor victim had to keep working with him through all the legal proceedings. He was one of the top sales people so it was brushed under the carpet Xmas Shock Xmas Angry

I've been fired 3 times after Christmas do's, each one I was a temp. This was YEARS ago, I wouldn't even go to one now, let alone drink too much!

Companies can do it, and DO do it, however, they should also consider that a free bar isn't always a good idea!

Employer had probably been looking to get rid if him anyway & this was great oppertunity - no notice req'd and no risk of dispute as he's a jobber.

I'm a contractor & know that you always play by the rules, he was an idiot
