morrisons add on the radio goes something along the lines of...

christmas can be pretty dull for non meat eaters, that's why we have created our fish roast'

erm, fish, living animal = meat!

OP posts:
GoldQuintessenceAndMyhrr · 21/12/2012 20:23

Fish is fish, and Animal is meat, but both are flesh.

And as are peaches.

So, you could say that some vegetarians eat flesh.

AlexanderS · 21/12/2012 20:25

Sorry, I must have got that wrong. It was years ago, in my teens, that I looked into animal rights, factory farming, where animal products come from, all that stuff. I can't stand to read about it now, ever since I had DS it gets me too upset.

IneedAsockamnesty · 21/12/2012 20:25

And I won't buy anything made of suede - that comes from cow foetuses and is just disgusting

Hmm no its not,

Suede is made from the underside of lamb/calf/goat/ cow hide or deer skin not foetuses of any of them

XiCi · 21/12/2012 20:40

Suede is made from cow foetus hahahah that is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. Where do people get this shit from?
And all this crap about meat eaters feeling they have a dirty habit. WTAF?? No, actually I feel that meat is delicious and nutritious.
Gatting back to the OP that's a pet hate of mine, people proclaiming that they're vegetarians and then saying they eat fish. If you are going to preach about not killing animals to eat why would a fish be any different to a sheep. It doesn't make sense.

bealos · 21/12/2012 20:44

That looks gross. And reminds me of the Quorn kievs I used to get as a vegetarian teenager - well, obviously not in the way that it's fish but in the manufactured-ness and trying to shape a thing into a meat shape.

I eat fish these days, and generally correct people when they ask if I'm a vegetarian, to "no, I don't eat meat. I eat fish and everything else".

LittleChristmasBearPad · 21/12/2012 20:47

Been told we're having it on Boxing Day Xmas Sad. Wish me luck. I loathe most fish.

PiccadillyCervix · 21/12/2012 20:52

No, fish is fish. The clue is in the name.

So chicken isn't meat then? Or Beef?

PiccadillyCervix · 21/12/2012 20:57

According to Google the definition of meat is:

meat

/mēt/
Noun
The flesh of an animal as food.

Fish is an animal. I'm not saying it a very clever animal. But animal none the less

LRDtheFeministDude · 21/12/2012 21:00

Ok, I was being snide.

But fish isn't meat.

There is no need to insist on categorizing it with meat (which is confusing for people with special dietary needs, as someone else pointed out re. Judaism) in order to emphasize that vegetarians don't eat fish. People just need to learn vegetarians don't eat fish or meat, or poultry, and you don't get to pick and choose if you call yourself a vegetarian.

ErikNorseman · 21/12/2012 21:03

Fish is meat to me, as it is the flesh of a creature that used to be alive and is now dead. I appreciate that it isn't considered meat by many, and I'm not fussed by people who call themselves vegetarian but eat fish occasionally. As long as I don't get served fish as a 'vegetarian option' it doesn't bother me, but I accept that it does confuse the sort of people who think vegetarians are wackjobs don't understand vegetarianism.

I love christmas dinner. Delicious nut roast with satay sauce, roast pots, pasrnips, red cabbage, sprouts, yorkshire puds. what's not to love?

moogdroog · 21/12/2012 22:21

Mmm Scarletlady that sounds delicious. We're having white nut roast and roasted root vegetable tart, apparently. DM is doing the hard work (joys of coming from a vegetarian family).

Panzee · 21/12/2012 22:26

"No food with a face" usually gets me through most vegetarian definitions.

AlexanderS · 30/12/2012 09:09

There was no need to be rude XiCi.

AlexanderS · 30/12/2012 09:12

P.S. Meat nutricious? Confused It's full of fat.

msrisotto · 30/12/2012 09:21

AlexanderS, you don't appear to know very much about this topic! I suggest you do a quick google before spouting off on here! Meat is not all full of fat and does in fact contain nutritious substances such as protein.

tittytittyhanghang · 30/12/2012 09:21

YANBU, other people may categorise it as to suit their needs, but if it used to be a living breathing animal then its meat imo.

BarredfromhavingStella · 30/12/2012 09:36

AlexanderS defining meat eating as a dirty habit is pretty rude tbh & rest assured I would be very clear on my preference in a conversation with a vegetarian-telling you I'm virtually a vegetarian as I hardly eat any meat Hmm nah, it's a daily consumption of mine & as for the full of fat crap you are totally incorrect.

SparklingSnow · 30/12/2012 11:50

As far as I'm concerned, eating fish is the same as eating meat. So you cannot possibly be a vegetarian and still eat fish. You would be a pescatarian.

HeadfirstForAMistletoeKiss · 30/12/2012 11:55

Meat is the flesh of an animal, fish have flesh. It's meat.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 30/12/2012 12:10

I dont understand why some vegetarians have to bleat on about meat being a dirty habit etc.

You choose not to eat it, thats fine, but stop preaching and being so rude. Live and let live.

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 12:19

Alexander5 bit of a generalisation no?

I'd never refer to myself as "practically vegetarian". I might prefer to myself as "practically a carnivore" though Smile

Alisvolatpropiis · 30/12/2012 12:24

YABU unreasonable though OP - fish is fish.

Morrisons do seem to have confused vegetarianism and pescetarianism though.

TinyDancingHoofer · 30/12/2012 12:27

As a non-veg fish is meat. I refuse to cater to moral vegetarians that eat fish, wear leather, drink milk, eat sweeties with non-veg gelatine. You are either a full veggie/vegan or not in this house. If it is cruel to eat a cute lamb then it is cruel to eat an ugly fish.

This rule obvs excludes allergies/religious needs.

CatPussRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 30/12/2012 12:28

"I like to think this is because meat eaters know deep-down it's a disgusting habit! Like smoking!"
Nope! I never downplay my meat intake to make vegetarians feel better. I love meat. Can't get enough of it. Absolutely love it. If I had more room, I would grow my own. You want to be veggie, then fair play to you, but don't preach to me and don't expect me to humour you!
Fish is meat. It comes from a living dreature. If you eat it, then you aren't veggie. And you are a hypocrite.

TinyDancingHoofer · 30/12/2012 12:28

*As a non-vegeterian
